Dmusic Indie Dance Party Vol I
Posted by Bluegrassleflaw in on December 16, 2003 at 10:36 AM

This is a cool thing that DMusic is doing along with Suspectz Records. We all contribute tracks and DMusic and Suspectz will press the CD's and send them back to each artist or band to sell, along with promo copies, T-shirts and other promo material! Independent artists promoting and distributing each others music. Imagine! hundreds of bands, DJ's emcees, solo artists, and producers hawking each others CD's. Thats promotion in my book.

A D Music CD is in the works. And is being hosted by Suspectz Records and Dmusic. If you want your track to be checked out send your DMusic Link to info@suspectzrecords.com and it will get listened to. Also make sure your tracks are industry quality (this dosent mean made in a big time studio). Just make sure that you would go into a store and buy it.

The first DMusic compilation CD, in progress right now!

All Dmusic requires from each contributor is

1) a wav file or a CD itself with a full 16 bit 44.1Khz file

2) Band photos in PNG, PDF, BMP or equivalent high a resolution format (adobe photoshop, quark express, Windows Point should work - use JPEG or GIF as as last resort they are lower resolution and

3) a faxed written permission to 215-885-3302 to include the track on the compilation, and

4) proof that the song and track are copyrighted (either copyright registration or statement that it track and/or song are not copyrighted in the name of the contributor). "Cover" songs will require a mechanical payment of 8 cents a copy sold to the copyright owner, which DMusic will advance). And DMusic will file copyright registrations and administer publishing for a small fee, if any contributors need that service.

We have almost enough tracks for the first Vol 1. Dmusic compilation, and are reviewing tracks for Vol 2 and 3 now.

Cool? Where's your track, by the way?

When Jennae was doing this ... I had many questions and there were some issues unresolved. Things were moving slower - now the pace seems a to have be increased. So if I may ask a couple of questions. Not complete list of questions by any means... but enough to start this dialog.

Leflaw please address these issues directly.

Is this CD for sale or promo only.... details please?

It's for sale...
a.) Who is a selling it?
b.) How much?
c.) How are the artist’s to be compensated ?
d.) What Dmusic's involvement/commitment/and what will the future rights of use be ...?
e.) Who collects money? Keeps the accounting? Where does the money go?

What is SuspectzRecords involvement? ... How are they to be compensated?

I saw no open bid for these services offered so .... How were they chosen ?

If it's for promo only - are they being given away? And to whom?

Who pays for packaging – CD replication?

_____________

a.) You are, if you are on it. DMusic and Suspectz fronts the cost of the pressing, aproximately 2500 copies, and will keep 50% of the CD's for promo or sale, (and will pay any applicable mechanical royalties on any sales by us for "cover tunes". The rest get distributed to the artists on the compilation, (pro rata - you get two shares if you are on two tracks, etc). No more pressings without consent, no future rights, except we have the right to print up to 10,000 additional CD's on the same terms ( i.e half get distributed to the bands on the tracks pro rata.

b.) Whatever you want to sell it for. Try 10 bucks.

c.) See #b

d.) You pay us after you sell a CD, every 30 days. Send us half (%50) of what you sell after you get paid. When you sell out, we'll send you some more. We trust you. We are trying to build a band distributorship business. Ultimately we want to have hundreds of bands and artists selling dmusic compilation, where the tracks are licensed for limited runs and the artists and Dmusic both selling them.

e. See above. Each artist and Dmusic keeps there own books, since the deal is driven by artists collecting the cash and sending some back to Dmusic, and not vice versa. DMusic and Suspectz cut is the CD's we retain to promote or distribute as we think best, with the artists being able todo the same. We are not going to set a strict limit on "promo copies" att his time - We figure half and half to start the project, since the whole thing is about promotion.

Limited risk, limited liability, no assignment of copyright, get CD's s to sell on 50% consignment with other artists on them to sell at your own gigs - not a bad deal, we think. Ultimately, we foresee 1000 bands selling each others compilations.

After 10,000 units, any band can drop out of the program, so nobodies pressing platinum and not telling you. As a matter of fact, we'll tell you the name and address of the pressing plant so you can call them to check.

f.) This first compilation is a DMusic/Suspectz project. We are planning three Cd's right now. Think mixed bag eclectic for right now. We haven't decided the mix yet. by monday -so send over any interesting tracks.

Tracks to be chosen by consensus of Leflaw, Boss Hogg, Jennae, Milladrive, fu-dog, lreznik, Jabein, and all their loved ones and sigbificant others who put up with all this noise.

Its not hard to find great tracks with a great place like DMusic. And remember - we have Volumes 2 and 3 in the works right now

Good concept and I think the this is something that everyone will benefit from. Using artists to sell each others records is nothing new. It is something that the RIAA has been doing years and years. Remember Aerosmith and Run DMC (or whoever that was)? They cross market their music to attract people from both crowds and sell more cds. When is the last time you listened to a hip hop track that was from some artist featuring someone else?

DMusic and Suspectz Rcords agrees with that principle. Break down artificial barriers .

i agree the blue cover is fucking sweet

if vol 1 was the same font as the rest

and the other writing was in a cooler font, it would be the bestest logo in the whole entire universe, in my opinion..
