Kazaa Lite Shut Down
Posted by: FreakinWeasel (www.thebighack.org) on Dec 06, 2003 - 11:28 AM

JFM at Peer Guardian has this news. Speaking with RatFaced, one of the Kazaa Lite forum moderators today and our contact at K-Lite, I have uncovered news that the Kazaa Lite K++ project has been shut down by Sharman Networks on grounds of copyright infringement.
The project, which had been set up to block spy and ad ware within the Kazaa Media Desktop Program has achieved notoriety within the P2P world through its simplistic approach and success in reverse engineering the Kazaa application.

Source: Peer Guardian

However, the program infringed on the copyright of Sharman Networks, the company that now own and program the Kazaa Media Desktop application, after the purchase of the code and copyright in 2002. The FastTrack (Kazaa) network is financed through advertising systems, which Kazaa Lite K++ does not include, and so was seen as a threat by the owners.

Sharman have threatened legal action, and ordered that the offending content be removed from the official Kazaa Lite sites, including http://www.kazaalite.tk/ which now contains no reference to the existance of the application.

RatFaced said that the decision was “Ironic, that Kazaa is complaining about copyright issues, especially as K-Lite ++ stands for everything that Kazaa CLAIMS to stand for... but fails to deliver.”

We will perhaps never see Kazaa Lite again, but we can hope that users will remain aware of the spyware that is hidden inside the Kazaa application, which is used to finance the creation of the software.

1) RIAA was abusing the Kazaa Lite and distributing hacked versions of Kazaa Lite.

2) They did buy the code + copyright.

3) Oh no, spyware, I guess I'll have to turn on my ad-aware and spybot and pop-up-stopper...

Yeah, it does kind of suck, but for the time being, until we get digital music made legal or at least the DMCA revoked they had to.

oldschool, the next news item down the list explains that kazaa lite will deteriorate over time, it'll get slower and slower until it's unusable. It's all technobabble to me, but if you get that stuff, you might want to read down the news page.

I liked K+....its a shame...a damm shame.

We need to get copyright revoked. No one has the right to say who makes money off their creations. Or at least, it should be that way. To me, (C) = Less creativity, More lucrativity

There are, of course, alternatives to Kazaa and Kazaa Lite. I use BearShare (on the Gnutella network) which is usually not in the RIAA's eye, but I can still find everything I want. Also, BearShare incorporated new features to make filesharing safer. When you download the new version, you have to move the mouse around and type randomly to create an encryption key.

I reccomend BearShare if you need a new p2p app.

I understand why KLite will deteroriate over time. It's simple. For those of you who can't understand it- send me a dmusic note and I'll explain.

I dumped kazaa about a year ago over their spyware crap (cydoor and not-so-brilliant digital). I find it strange that the company who was whining the loudest about and doing the least about the dmca is now using it like a club to keep their profits up.

Cant remember the name...ugh.

DarkhorseX: present you evidence?
Shareaza is the best for newbies and other former KaZaA users. it is even good for p2p enthuiestis.

BearShare= Spyware/ads = bad

My source existed three months ago, as an official news post on this very site.

Use WinMX, ES5, mIRC, FURTHUR network, etc.

Avoid Piolet Networks, Morpheus and it's relatives, Fastrack networks, etc.

I don't think the selection on Winmx is very good though and the dls are slow.
IntermediateBufo

SS4Matt,

Is sharing copyrighted mp3 files on WinMX really legal according to the RIAA? Why would WinMX be considered to be any more "legal" than other P2Ps?

LimeWire and Bearshare run on Gnutella. They're both good, but I like bearshare better.

Don't matter by me, I don't use Kazaa no more and would never support them. It's a piece of crap software loaded with crapware.

Waits for Kazaa to start suing there customers like there brother the RIAA.

its a shame.... mp3.com and now k-lite, two of the easiest ways to get mp3's shutdown so close to one another... but at least they'll never be able to compeletely elimate file-sharing. They'll always be a program out there, a new one will aways pop up. WinMX here i come!
DMemberstdlibh

People, just use good ole' fashioned ftp and http. Or simply share non-RIAA material. Check out http://www.riaaradar.com

What law says downloading mp3's is illegal?
Who the hell does the RIAA think they are telling me what the law is?

It's illegal to have a gestapo industry try to claim exemption from antitrust laws while suing it's customers to give in to their 95% market share.

It's illegal to hack and employ the same technology your abhor to try to catch so-called "infringers"

It's illegal to conduct market research using the same network you're trying to destroy just to shove more garbage pop culture up our asses.

It's illegal to synthesize Brittany spears voice using DSP technology and claim she actually has talent.

It's illegal corner the market by poluting our american culture with hyper-marketing 2-second candy pop "stars", paying off government lackies that need $$ and votes just to maintain your business, and sleeping with the FCC so that all radio airwaves repeatedly play the same shit you sold them.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! RIAA, sue me... PLEASE. I've downloaded your website, read the bullshit your puppet artists spew about mp3's and it's pathetic. Just give it up. Learn a new business model and leave the American people the fuck alone. You are already rich, as well as your labels/artists. Count your blessings and give it up. Stop causing more Americans to get angry or you will have to deal with problems a lot more illegal than someone just transferring bytes over a network!

They probally just wanted to shut down Kazaa Lite because they are SELLING Kazaa Plus at $30 a pop with a lot of the same features as Kazaa Lite :-P (Razz)

The reason I liked Kazaa Lite over Kazaa was that when I searched for something, it would not limit the # of hits for an item like plain old Kazaa would do

Yopu could get 1000s of hits for one item on K-Lite, but Kazaa limited that to about 200 or so
