New Round of DMCA Letters

Comcast warns Bit Torrent, E-donkey users
Written by Karl Bode
Users of Bit Torrent and E-Donkey get a visit from the DMCA fairy via Comcast headquarters. As Kazaa became the primary focus of the RIAA's pirate-hunt, many users fled to alternate networks like E-donkey or began using Bit-Torrent (see past article on Bit Torrent) in the belief they might be able to avoid the piracy police. According to this thread in our Comcast forum, that isn't the case. The E-donkey crackdown isn't surprising, since it's a mainstream p2p application, but the Bit Torrent film crackdown has even more traders fleeing to newsgroups and IRC.

The letter itself:

Dear comcast high-speed internet Subscriber:

Comcast has received a notification of claimed infringement made under the Digital millennium Copyright Act(the'DMCA'). This notification, made by a copyright owner or its authorized agent, reports an alleged infringement of one or more copyrighted works made on or over Comcast's High-Speed Internet service(the 'Service'). The works identified in the notification of claimed infringement are listed below. In accordance with the DMCA and Comcast's acceptable Use Policy, Comcast request that you immediately remove the allegedly infringing works from the Service or Comcast will be forced to remove or block access to the works.

If you believe in good faith that the allegedly infringing works have been removed or blocked by mistake or misidentification, then you may send a counter notification to Comcast. Upon Comcast's receipt of a counter notification that satisfies the requirements of the DMCA, Comcast will provide a copy of the counter notification to the party who sent the original notification of claimed infringement. We will the follow the DMCA's procedures with respect to a received counter notification.

For more information regarding Comcast's copyright infringement policy, procedures, and contact information, please read our Acceptable Use Policy by clicking on the terms of Service link at »www.comcast.net

Sincerely,
Comcast Network Abuse and Observance Team...

YARRRGH

Is this article about the Riaa suing or issuing DMCA letters to Comcast users or is Comcast being proactive and telling their users to quit trading files? The article is not clear on this.

Shiver me timbers.

If you notice in the infringement letter, the infringing file is a anti-virus program. Another post was made concerning this.

The person had a anti-virus program and the program dialed home alerting the company that someone was using a unauthorized copy of the program.

Wonder if the music services will start doing this with music files that people download. Making sure the copy is a authorized copy for the intended user.

They'll never stop filesharing of any kind. People will find other ways on and on! If providers start keeping people from doing things they will lose their clientel. Stupidity on their part! The RIAA wants to put everyone out of business I guess!

It'll happen if we let them and it'll go beyond their wildest imagination.

phoning home, thoes tricky bastards, that why I don't use WMA, har har har har!

ARGE MATIES, it's time to be the scurges of the internet sea once again!

The RIAA is only looking out for itself, and not even it's artists and what not, they are pure evil. they are WORSE THAN HITLER, STALIN, AND COMMUNISM. they are the source of all evil. And more bad and evil things will sprout from hell until we send them back to where they belong (hell).

I don't remember the last time I installed a peace of software that hasn't tried to "phone home". More like update it's maker with a spy report if you ask me. Anyway, use a good firewall and theres no phone to call hoem with.

mroop...you're better than that my friend... making such sarcastic comments tend to turn people off and make you look bad, and lead them to ignore a lot of the valuable things you do say..just trying to give you another perspective...sometimes even I need that :) (Smile)
