p2p for newbies
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on October 11, 2003 at 11:48 AM

What's it all about - file-sharing, that is?

If you're new to p2p (can that be possible? : ) and looking for info on the "the best and safest way to download the music files," check out Slyck's Lifesaving Society Rookie Downloading Guide.

"While the battlefield constantly changes in this war, Slyck.com is here to ensure that the average, everyday users know where they can go to get the music they want in the best and SAFEST ways possible," says the intro.

For example, "Most people don't realize that perhaps the best and safest way of obtaining MP3 files is the Newsgroups," says Slyck. "With hundreds of groups dedicated to every type of file imaginable, the newsgroups are also known as being one of the most comprehensive sources of information."

Then there's Filetopia, "unique because it employs strong encryption techniques to protect communications, and more importantly, your Internet Protocol (IP) address."

WinMX maybe, or eDonkey/Overnet?

The Rookie Guide'll do it for you.

I'm surprised they didn't mention Earth Station Five. It's still in its beta stages, however it's a better step in the right direction than some of the things mentioned.

I've heard nothing bug good things about DC so far. Many of my friends use it. Security on it, on the other hand doesn't seem to be that great (the guide mentions nothing about it).

I mean if you look at the list the RIAA uses to find songs that people have you'll notice most of the songs or old as dirt and not the most popular songs. I mean artist like Marvin Gray, Frank Senatra. Not that those artist are bad, I'm just sure its not the songs most people are ripping. Plus the safest way not to get caught is, don't downlaod 5 miilion songs a week and sure as hell dont share your entire MP3 collection. Move the song files out of shared soon as possible.

or get away from RiAA music entirely, stop downloading and uploading it, and its suddenly a completely safe environment.

All this suing has turned your beautiful once free land "into" a sewer. What a mess!

I really sympathize with you all. ..terrorists trying to blow you up...corporations who you are supporting trying to bankrupt you..and your own government being bribed into stripping you of your rights..heh...Miscrosoft trying to control your computers. When will you all stand together as a people and say enuff is enuff?

You do have the power as a public to put an end to this..by voting..and
boycotting products.

Boycott them all!..Get your land back!

ES5 could have gotten so much more respect from the P2P community if it had not spammed everywhere and stood there shouting how great it is. It's roots are dubious at best, worrying at worse. And it's interface is slow and buggy.

Actually, that was the users and other sites spamming ES5, but yes that spamming was a big turn off.

It has the right idea though. People just need to remember it's in beta. The interface sure could use a nice kick start.

Newsgroups and Messengers, and I don't think the RIAA can peek in on either. What else is good?

tasadar24, I think when people run right out there like sheep and hand over their money for the "new latest craze" they make these corporations wealthier to buy politicians and lawyers to create laws to sue consumers, all the while taking your rights away. That kind of thing is definatley all of our faults. We are like hypnotized sheep when we run out and support them...eyes still spinning and glowing from the radiation of either our TV's or monitors because of an ad that was dealt to us.
As for the terrorist thing..looking back on it I see why you took it that way. Sorry..it wasn't meant like that. All I meant was it seems like everyone is after you guys down there. The terrroist thing is your government's fault in my opinion.
Actually mnost of this stuff boils down to your governmenet. They are either in bed with big corporations or pissing people off to wanna come cause destruction.

What does terrorists have to to with this subject or this site? We should just keep to the subject at hand. Other political views should be kept for another time. We all have different views but we can all agree on 1 thing, that's why we are all here.

You know, I missed AudioGalaxy when it went under. I wished I had such a guide at that time. Never did any d/ling till then, I guess you could say that if the RIAA hadn't have made such a splash with it, I would never have known about p2p's.

They seem to be their own worse enemy...

newsgroups are safe for downloads but not for uploads. The posts' headers will have the uploaders IP address with most ISP's news servers. The safest file sharing is just among your friends without using the internet. It's easy to exchange lists of what you have with your friends and just burn the mp3's on CD s that they want.

--WARNING***SPOOF***WARNING===

I managed to download the WHOLE WORLD in a super double secret probation version of a WinRar/WinZip beta, and compressed all of the copyrighted works of the world into a 10 gig file and uploaded it to Kazaa and Filetopia (it includes Orrin Hatch's unlisted number), so, if you see a 10gig file on Kazaa called WholeWorld.ziprar , well, I guess you know who to thank :) (Smile)

hey bulk are you going to post version numbers for incremental updates or do we have to keep downloading the entire current file everyday! lmao...

this may be a simple question to most of you....but how is IP detection possible through P2P? is it as simple as a netstat command?
IntermediateRIAAposterchild
Date: October 14, 2003 @ 1:07 AM
yep Threshr simple as that...

try using tcpview from www.sysinternals.com. It's free and will show in realtime all current connections with resolved host names...
