'Block the RIAA / MPAA' file updated
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on October 11, 2003 at 9:13 AM

Techfocus' Ban the RIAA, not to speak of the MPAA and anyone else you don't want poking around your site, is all-but finished.

Bill Royle, Seraphielx and Programmers_X, Y, and Z have been hard at it for quite a while, 'it' being the .htaccess file created to block the RIAA and MPAA from accessing Techfocus, due to a violation of the Techfocus reprint policy, "and because we think they're a bunch of repugnant thugs," as Royle succinctly sums it up on the site.

Techfocus is working on a new an Apache tool but until that's finished, an updated file - now officially known as the "Htaccess Project" - has been rolled out. You can get it here.

Questions? Click here but, says Royle, ""Please keep in mind that we answer as many questions as possible, but many questions are already answered in the forums - every release triggers hundreds of emails, and we're doing this as a labor of love! There's only so much time in the day

"Only one request from us: please host the images included in the updated package when using this file on your site!"

Ok, in theory, if you were to use this on your website, you would block the RIAA from accessing it via their known networks, and essentially 'protect' your website, which is a 'digital work' from access from the RIAA and MPAA. If you then included a start page that says you have to agree to the terms of the site before viewing it, and in the terms said that people who work for the RIAA, or are affiliated, or contracted out by the RIAA were expressly forbidden from entering the site, would it not constitute quite a few felenous violations of anti-piracy and anti-hacking laws were they to enter your site (you took measures to prevent them from accessing the site, which means they would have to go outside normal means to access it, and it iwould be considered a 'protected digital' work.)

simply put, what i said is that if i used this file to blck tham and said on my site they were not allowed, their accessing my site via any means beyond the front page and terms of service would violate quite a few DMCA laws.. They would be using a digital (websites are stored in digital format) media (websites are media, same as newspapers or TV) without concent and even being told not to. If they can use the DMCA so can i.

Yes, joe's right, Kazaa has sued the RIAA, but I'm not sure what for, although I do think that's it. As for the software, go with what works.

ZeonMusic - KaZaA is sueing the RIAA for using an unlicensed version of KaZaA (KaZaA Lite) and for using the FastTrack Network for corporate use, while the ToS for the network clearly states its for personal use only, so not only are they using illegal software to 'hack' into the network, they are also violating the terms of service for the network.
