Orrin Hatch lectures on an imaginary CD
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on October 8, 2003 at 4:00 PM

Do you sometimes wonder about the potential ravages file sharing might bring?

Wonder no more because senator Orrin Hatch delivered a speech to a spell-bound audience at Washington's National Press Club which should make everything clear.

During his address, he asked his audience to imagine a conversation with, "someone about a CD" ...

... "The best thing is that it was free. I downloaded the music with some of that filesharing software."

"It was really free?" you ask. "That sounds like a pretty good deal."

He thinks for a minute and says,

"Well, I did have to disclose all my Internet passwords."

"And I had to give out my financial and tax return information. Oh, and I had to let interested folks read the love letters I e-mailed to my wife."

"And," he says, "I had to let my kids see porn. And there was that pedophile predator who sent instant messages to my kids."

"Oh," he says, "I found one pornographic picture down loaded to my computer. That was bad enough, but then some kid downloaded it from my computer, and now I'm being prosecuted for distributing pornography to minors."

"Then the singer of that song hauled me into federal court and sued me for $50,000 in statutory damages, plus all of her court costs and attorneys fees. I had to hire a lawyer for that, but the good news is that my lawyer gave me a package deal. He's also representing me in my criminal case."

"That free music had a hefty price tag."

Represented by Great Minds such as senator Hatch, Americans need fear no evil.

Anyone wanna take bets that Hatch's "speech" makes some of the daily news mouth pieces by tomorrow?

I am becoming more and more convinced daily that Orrin Hatch has serious mental problems, of a degree and nature that shall render him unfit for public service. And, I am not being funny about this either!

This guy is getting crazy as a loon!

That is just pure stupidity...It's not like you don't notice the fact that there's an internet explorer icon next to the name"britney spears nude",etc.

I mean it's almost impossible to find pr0n if you're looking for songs.
Sounds like Mr.Hatch was downloading something _other_ than music.

did anyone see the strings held But the RIAA attached to his arms and mouth? BTW Mr Senator, People wouldn't get hauled into federal court if you and your buddies weren't sleeping with the industry and passed the laws, also your kids wouldn't have been exposed to the porn if you would've gotten off your dead Butt and did something about it rather then spending your time passing legislation that makes it possible for private companies to victimize little girls and single moms

Hmm. He said he had to let his kids see porn heh. Uh, agrees with pacman. Sounds like he's downloading more than music. And with the way he was putting down Instant messaging, who knows. Instant messaging might be next on the "radar" as far as legislation goes. They might outlaw that since many instant messaging programs have p2p/file transfers built into them.

It's been said before on other threads, but ill say it again here, to share anything like that, you have to purposely move it to your shared folder, and anyone that moves all that stuff to their shared folder would have to be a complete idiot, well orrin hatch is, but not everyone is, as he's saying.

Hmm...Any monkey on the street will show you how to set up a P2P program. Then again, Hatch is no ordinary monkey. Funny how he contiues to link music to porn. Where has he been since MTV first aired. Orrin? Watch MTV sometime. You should see how kids already watch music/porn on their TV's! (Quote from above): "I had to let my kids see porn." WTF is that? "HAD" to? I looked over the various P2P "User Agreements" files. Did not see any "HAVE to's" there. Come to think of it. None of them did I "HAVE to" expose ANY internet passwords. this article profoundly shows just how much Hatch DOESN'T know about P2P. Has Bill O'Reilly addressed this yet? If anyone knows of any articles from Bill, Please post link.

Or perhaps we should do away with television because we all know people just watch porn on those things. Oh, I know. Legs! Legs can be used to walk to smut shops where we can use personally identifiable material (credit cards) to purchase more porn! Hatch must be pro-dismemberment...

Hatch is such a moron it's obvious he has no idea how the technology really works. Therefore, one would also conclude that he has no understanding how an MP3 file is a 1/10 lossy copy of the original file. If he can't comprehend how real Peer to Peer file sharing works, he most certainly can't understand the intimate details on how the computer changes music files. For that matter, he has no comprehension of our copyright laws either! What a moron. And THIS is the person we have representing us in our government. Only one solution... VOTE HIM OUT!

just a bit on the extremist side... Y'know they call people like us libetarians or extremist and then the ones that claim to be conservative come out with crap like that. And yes there is a difference between an mp3 and a cd. Theres a difference between an insecure and a secure file sharing program. Theres a difference between stealing and copyright infringement. and theres a difference between a lot of other things these jerks talk about. Stretching the truth seems to be a common practice with these people. Makes me think they have something to hide.

criminal case.. all these cases have been civil so far. So now worry they are going to put you in jail for file-sharing. Shame on you Orrin Hatch because you do not represent the people who voted you in but the special interest that distubuted that shitty music you make.

There is an entire generation of technologically inept and computer illiterate politicians. We apparently have to wait until they all expire before any semblance of reality sets in.

Technology is accelerating all the time. Government and the music industry are still moving at a glacial pace.

Neither can keep up because neither has really put any effort into trying. Both seem to believe that by merely announcing that something is a fact, it makes it so.

It used to make me mad. Now it's just sad, growing a little more sorrowful each time a government spokesman like Hatch steps forward and utters such total nonsense. The sad part is that he probably believes it is right. This is, of course, the "moron defense," my name for that situation wherein your only defense against any obvious charge is to claim that you are simply stupid and didn't know any better.

The scary part of this scenario is when you consider the alternative -- that Hatch really knows exactly what he's talking about and says this drivel anyway. That line of thought takes you into motives, etc., and we don't want to go there.

So we've gotta go with stupid.

yes George at a glacier pace, but stupid or not he has alot of power. This speech is not so funny to me. How many people will share or download music if they are facing fedral prison? It want matter if it is authorized or not no one will. So my band will be up the creek in manner of speaking because people wil be scared that they might get prison time if they download or share our music. Each day I feel it all slipping away. It seems that the internet keeps getting more and more restrictive pretty soon it will be like radio and T.V. cant control just have to sit and watch.

I believe the referenc to giving away financial information was a reference to the rumors the RIAA and co have been spreading. Their Musicunited.org propaganda website says several times that...hang on, I will get a quote. Need to shut this window down, school computers playing up...
Advancedgoldenpi

Ok, heres the section on musicunited.org I was refering too:

In the section titled "take it off":
You probably also make files on your hard drive available for others to upload. Not only does this make you a potential illegal distributor, it also means that whenever you’re online, every other network user around the world (and there are tens of millions of them) has the ability to access your hard drive.

And in the section titles "parents page":
Even more shocking is the fact some illicit "peer to peer" networks, such as Kazaa, actually commandeer a portion of the hard drive on your computer for illegal downloading and uploading by network members around the world. Once you register with them, all the files on your computer hard drive can be fair game. Depending on the settings you choose, peer-to-peer users can explore your computer to find private financial information; confidential, personal and professional data; and other sensitive documents.

Once your child becomes a member, other members—who could be anybody from the kid down the street, to someone half way around the globe —can access the computer and its contents in your house.

Musicunited also talks extensively about the dangers of porn and lawyers, suggesting Hatch may have been looked at the site as research for this speech. Its a very funny site. The lies are so obvious its entertaining.

Maybe all the independant film and music producers should band together and sue the RIAA for Hi-jacking our distribution center. Show everyone how our distribution is down since the RIAA started suing everyone, supeana thier ISP for THIER information and start calling and see if they want to settle out of court or litigate for 150,000.00 per incident. Get them for anti-trust tatics and conspriracy against "good" products.
