Charter Communications says as well as the lawsuit it's already filed to stop the RIAA from getting the IDs of customers under DMCA subpoenas, it's now filed for a protective order asking the Federal District Court in St Louis to block the RIAA from trying to enforce earlier subpoenas, "for many of the same customers that RIAA had filed in Federal District Court in Washington, D.C".
In a statement, Charter says it considers, "customer relationships to be its most important responsibility. Accordingly, we're exercising our legal rights in order to protect the legitimate interests of our customers and our business."
To date, the Company has not supplied RIAA with any information under the subpoenas, it says.
"Contact Charter Communications Internet Security Manager Larry Schenone at 314-543-2490 or by e-mail at lschenone@chartercom.com," the company tells worried customers on a web page put up for the purpose.

I reccomend everyone send email and/or calls to their service providers stating your feelings on the matter to them. A few notes to your state ans federal representatives won't hurt either.

Here is the feedback portion of the Charter Website. My comments will be under the main subject of "Compliment, Complaint, or Suggestion" and sub-category of "Other".
Also: I know at least two of us here are from St. Louis? Is there anybody else? Speak up.

Hellz yeah, fellow stl people unite. Charter has never done anything to piss me off as a customer, and this will make me even more loyal.
Way to go, charter. We do have big business friends against the industry!

I am a charter customer in Kansas. They have been good to me, and I aplaud their good sense in fighting the riaa's incredibly stupid decision to bite the hands that feed them.

g-g-Pa,
Nice to see you here.
I fibbed a little. I'm going to school at UM-Columbia, but I can drive back to St. Louis whenever, it's where I'm from. Hour drive.
I emailed Charter Communications my compliments and commended and thanked them.
I hope everyone follows up on this great news by emailing them and doing the same.

I am truely amazed at charter stance on this. As a cable company they always were tryin to screw you. Guess you just dont know sometimes.

They know that sucessful enforcement and presuit of the supeonas will cause a massive drop in their operating incomes. No one in their right mind will want broadband if this is sucessful. Call it what you will but you see self interest working here, I for one am glad to see it.

Why didn't Verizon just hold out like Charter is? Honestly what can the RIAA do if an ISP refuses to comply besides go an get a real court order which I think they are too scared to do hence the DMCA.
