There's a whole raft of stuff out there which depends 100% on technology. It sounds like sh*t without it.
Then you have live performance recordings. With them, you sense the atmosphere, you know the groups and/or individuals you're listening to are REAL (bum notes and all : ) and there's ambience instead of the sterile, engineered sounds presented by studio-made CDs. In short, recordings produced when bands and performers are out there sharing their art with live audiences are essential components for good music. Or is that a truism? heh
That's not to say all studio-made CDs are worthless. (Well, actually, they are if they come from any of the RIAA labels). But you know what I mean.
So are you lined up with the Dead, Phish, String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh and Friends, Dave Matthews Band and others? That's to ask: do you and/or your band allow the non-commercial taping and trading of your live performances?
If you do, you're in the excellent company of the Dead, et al, and would therefore be welcomed with open arms on Furthur Network, a very cool 100% non-commercial site dedicated to allowing and promoting the online sharing of legal live music.
The soul of p2p is the music
Furthur Network and the linked app FurthurNet represent the true soul of p2p.
The whole deal is, it almost goes without saying, open-source and the software, currently in beta and being developed and supported at the etree.org and sugarmegs.org music sharing communities, is there for the free downloading.
"All those involved, past and present, are and have been dead-i-cated to continue this open-source development effort in order to keep spreading legal live music to those who like it," say the people who put it together, speaking of whom:
"We have no paid developers, nor do we accept any advertising or compensation for our efforts. 'The Team' is located all over and collaborate on this project via the internet, chat, email and the mailing list. We always welcome new Volunteers of any experience level and keep a list of our current urgent needs Posted in this section for browsing.
FurtherNet features:
* = a feature exclusive to Furthur
* : PCP chaining allows users to 'piggy back' a download off another user. For example, person A downloads a fileset from the host, person B will then download from person A, person C will download from Person B, etc.
: Download a single show from more than one host. If an identical fileset/show is shared by more than one host/person, you will automatically download parts of the individual files from several hosts. The more people sending you data, even if one or more is a modem user, the quicker your download will be! If many people are sharing an identical fileset, the Antelope will stampede to maximize your downstream bandwidth!
* No Banner/ Popup Ads or Spyware activities!
* All shows on the Furthur Network are 100% MD5 verified! When users initially share a show, Furthur will run an MD5 verification check, to ensure the file integrity. If any file doesn't check out, Furthur won't allow it on the network. If it arrives and the MD5 doesn't pass, FurthurNet redownloads the failed track automatically.
* Advanced search screen. Furthur was designed specifically for the sharing of legal live music, and thus, has very advanced searching capabilities. Imagine searching the Furthur Network for available shows by audio format, band name, a specific date or date range, venue, specific songs in a set or even source!!!
* Share legal live Videos and Free and Shareware Music Software!
* Furthur can be easily configured dynamically to allow new artists who allow trading. If the Band isn't in our list and they have a solid taping policy that can be submitted, they can be added. This allows the Furthur Network to maintain the status quo of a 100% legit network of legally traded live music, while allowing easy future expandability.
It's now close to 4 pm Pacific, and I'm logged on. I had some trouble getting started but once I slowed down and took it step-by-step, no prob. I'm downloading some Bob Marley as I type and I'll be sharing shortly : )
Go for it! And don't forget FurtherNet is still looking for people to help out. Zoom over and have a look.

Just a little off track here, but noticed the bands name String Cheese Incident and remembered just seeing them interviewed the other day on CNN explaining the virtues of giving their music away for free.
They were doing a segment called The Future Of Music. I thought way to go guys! They also do some great stuff. pepe

Wow, this network is awesome. Theres so much good music. The best part.... Theres no britney spears!! YEAH BUDDY
newjon; I didn't mean anything spectacular by it, just that I got 160gig of drive space and I'm gonna start downloading from the network and share everything I get. The way I see it the more people help this network the more it will hurt the RIAA. That in and of itself is enough for me to sign on, but theres a lot of really good music on here too.

Hey, what a riot! The very thing the RIAA and cohorts should have really been fearing. That the people would say, we don't need you to get music. (They were saying that already with p2p before the stink came up with law suits.) Now they will be saying we don't need your music. You keep that and we will keep p2p. Where will they be when the money quits coming in? They alienated (and continue to do so) their customer base and then moan and groan that the money pipeline is squeezing shut.
Hello! Is anyone still at the wheel over at the majors or are they going to join us too?

wet1 This IS the very thing the riaa is fearing...just imagine, here comes along a group that everyone EXCEPT the riaa has heard of and they are making money and getting very popular, all BECAUSE of free file sharing.
And guess what, the band isn't in hawk to anyone..imagine that eh! pepe

That is the RIAA logo on the www.zug.com mp3 download page for that riaa prank call song.
I have however gotten a lot of strange connects since i started running furthur

Sadly, the port scans and attempts are going to continue. There is so much traffic on the internet from these searches that it amazes me that the internet has not shut down from overload. It is not uncommon sometimes to see from 2 to 7 hits a second. There ought to be a law against flooding the internet that way.

u mean the RIAA's scans? I really dont think those ones i posted are intentional scans. I'de be more apt to believe it is from an an employee of the institute, or maybe even a student. I checked my firewall logs and the log says they were directed to the furthur network app, and the ports it used were the same as the ones the other users connect to me on. As for the baytsp. I checked the logs and found it was a request from mozilla made at the same time i got the prank call mp3 last night. So I retraced my steps and found that an image on the zug website that was being stored on the RIAA servers.
http://www.riaa.com/images/logo.gif
I checked the address and it matches...

However, I do agree the port scans should be considered hacking activity and deemed illegal. Especially in the excess the RIAA and it's affiliates have been doing.

Happy Happy Joy Joy!
Thanks for sharing Further Network!
Quite an impressive band list (many I am a fan of already) and looking forward to learning about the newer bands as well.
Now to spend the rest of the weekend reading the Furthur FAQ's & clearing off the HD

Does the RIAA do scanning? Oh yes, I promise you they do. They would not be in the pg block list if they did not. Worse, they also hire or pay others to do the same.
It may be true that your North Carolina Research and Education Network is a student looking for songs, the ip traces back to:
North Carolina Research and Education Network
OrgID: CNRT
Address: NCSU-Computing Center Box 7109
City: Raleigh
StateProv: NC
PostalCode: 27695-7109
Country: US
but when I did a trace of the ip the machine is either off line or is in stealth mode. It could also be a student looking for a little money...

Well my computer is in stealth... The only reason that one does not surprise me is because it came in on the same ports Furthur uses.
However, looking back I had remembered the one mememe222 posted about. The one on the www.zug.com is;
Connection Rejected: 68.163.90.10 - tst inc -riaa host! read this http-//www.theregister.com/content/6/29554.html (09-27-2003 @ 16:32:55)
The double t's threw me off. I do remember getting a baytsp weeks ago. IIRC it was a random incoming on my netbios, so yes that probably is a scan.
mememe222, what ports did it attempt to use? What were you doing at the time of the attempt?

The beauty of open source
Majority of open source products have always been successful even if it takes time. Time well worth investing.
I smell a winner if we can get indie musicians to participate and all the folks out there to spread the word about this awesome technology.
Thank you too all involved in this.

I've downloade furthurnet and am anxious to try it however I've got a problem. I feel like an idiot but the firewall in my Linksys router keeps blocking the connection. I thought I knew how to set it up for port 7494 but I guess I don't. can anyone help.

My further uses all kinda different ports. I cant really see much of a pattern. So far they have stayed above 1000 and bellow 8000. They do all seem to be outgoing connections tho.

port 7494 is the port number in the further settings the message is that I need to open up that port through my firewall.

I think its going to be really good a little slow on dls..but oh well..lol. getting some hits on peer guardian, but was even before getting this. I think they had lists of IPs from before "all hell broke loose" and just keep randomly scanning to see if we are using p2p. I'm really getting tired of them hitting my machine, seems like an abuse to me

Log into the linksys router then click on the 'advanced' tab then select the 'forwarding' tab. In here add the service port range from: 7494 to:7494 and select tcp udp or both then fill in your lan ip address. Not sure if you only need tcp or both since I haven't tried the software as of yet. Don't forget to click apply.
Hope this helps...

Let's not forget an important point here...
That is supporting your indie groups by making time and going to their shows when they come around.
Just saw the Toasters & Kelly Bell Band tonight. What a kick ass show! And Kelly was selling his cds for $5 a pop. Now that's my kind of price! Bought all 3 for less than the cost of one of the 21st Century Music Gestapo's zombies. lol
Tomorrow is Southern Culture on The Skids and Reverend Horton Heat. Bought my tickets for tomorrow tonight.

For those interested, I run a Direct Connect hub. Do a search for oDC++, or DC++, install it, follow the instructions, and connect to audioeditplus.net. I have an average of 130-150 musicians sharing their work freely....granted, there's alot of beginners, and it's mostly Cubase or Reason based, but there's some good stuff available. I'm also working on putting together a CD of newbie stuff...people send me their music, in raw form, and I remaster it. Slow going, but I hope to have a couple of CD's of new bands ready in a few months, and it'll be available to all to listen to.
Reverend Horton Heat kicks some major ass.........good choice!

All kindsa good stuff.
I even found a bunch of old Jefferson Starship!!!

This whole Further thing, while excellent, is not new. It's been available for well over a year.
If you want to check out their forum I recommend you do, very informative. Also, they have a lot of tips posted that may increase your download speeds.
