A little more on PeerGuardian
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on September 25, 2003 at 5:02 PM

How does PG do what it does?

It identifies the people you don't want in your living room and slams the door in their faces - most of the time.

But it takes real people to do the IP checking - which is obviously critical - and one of them is Seraphielx.

"OK. Here's my part in PG," he says. "I'm the one who's looking for ip addressess, which are found in a lot of ways:

  • whois
  • smartwhois
  • ipindex.de
  • peerguardian logs
  • netpeeker logs
  • firewall logs
  • webserver logs

    "So on so forth."

['So forth' includes KaOS, of course - Ed]

"So what I do is trace back all these ip addressess and run a whois on them to figure out where they are.

"I'm storing my research for the moment and will be releasing it at some point in time.

"This is all public information that you can get from sites like arin and the like, so don't think this is a big thing at all ... just takes a lot of time.

"That's my part in this, enjoy ... It's really boring :)

"If you want what the others do, just go and check out the [PG] board. I know that everyone has the own way in doing things: all I'm doing is reading logs people send me."

Yeh. OK. There's more to it than that, of course, and it's a really time consuming, gutty grind.

So thanks, Seraphielx. And thanks Tim L, who put it all together in the first place. And thanks to all those other unnamed people who put their time and effort into apps such as PG so you can practice safe (well, relatively safe : ) surfing.

PG is my new hero. I never go online without his assistance for which I am eternally grateful.
