One side movies, one side music
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on September 18, 2003 at 1:50 PM

Sony and Warner are apparently all set to launch a disc with with music on one side, and movies on the other.

"The chairman of one of the music companies, who declined to be named, said: 'We are testing the market and we are going to launch it early next year," says Tim Burt in Britain's Financial Times here.

"Under the proposal, a single disc would combine a music album on one side and a digital versatile disc (DVD) on the other."

"Initial production would be led by the CD manufacturing arms of Sony and Warner Music, which is selling its CD factories to Cinram International of Canada."

It could be a nightmare as well..Often the version of the songs played in the movie is different than the songs on the "soundtrack" or they leave out important tunes. (usually due to licenseng issues from what I uderstand) Soundtracks and compilations often sell better than the originals because they try to make each one a hit. Look at the soundtrack for the Fast and the Furious as an example..

Just out of curiousity..

EXACTLY how the fuck are they gonna package which artist album is gonna be packaged with which movie?

Soundtracks? Why the fuck do I need a CD soundtrack if its already in the DVD software?

And what if I dont want an album??

How clever.

What kinds of drugs are these people on?

What a stupid idea. Both sides will be scratched beyond usability in no time.

Since it's so cheap to produce this stuff, why not just package TWO CDs in the box? One disc for the movie, and one disc for the soundtrack?

But I agree with the rest of you, I'm not buying, no way, no how, nowhere.

Not from RIAA affiliates.

indieWarriors- I think you should re-read the news notice that says
"May we have your attention, please?" Apparently you didn't think of following the new protocol- which includes not using curse words in order to help make this site more accessible.

On that note, this idea of putting music and movies all one disc is interesting, but unnecessary. It'll drive up the price. And what if that's the only version they're selling? It's like bundling. You have to pay extra for the soundtrack to get the movie.

The idea is to create a format that independent artists do not have access to.

Being a fan of movies, and being a fan of soundtracks, I actually do not see a problem with that concept, if they market it right (which we all know they won't).

The RIAA has done a great injustice to the soundtrack world so far - true, they push for sales on soundtracks to "Bad Boys II" or anything that has their biggest puppet of the moment singing, rapping, or crooning somewhere on it. But what about the great, big sweeping orchestral scores (Lord of the Rings, anyone)? I wouldn't be surprised if most moviegoers didn't even know there was a soundtrack CD available for something like that. The RIAA forced it into obscurity. And for what?

Great concept, but if the RIAA's involved, it's going to be overpriced and undermarketed. Sorry, RIAA - I'm not biting.

What a load of bovine fecal matter...so now the music labels want to put the movie labels on my boycott list.

Guarenteed to implement DRM.... And what do you do when your soundtrack/movie is a crappy manufacture and it dies on you? Does seem like a good concept, but they should fix their current problems before they start to multiply them.

Really, though, if you think about this it's fantastic news for us consumers. TWO things to boycott in one convenient package!

Anyone want to take bets on how long it will take them to blame it's utter and dismal failure on piracy?

I have dibs on a month.

"What we had here was a great thing. All a consumer had to do was sell his soul to us, and he'd have one disc with an album full of bad music on one side, and a movie full of bad music on the other side. Obviously the reason that this didn't succeed was because those evil pirates orchestrated it's destruction. Think of those poor artists. Time for another round of law suits."

One side available on Kazaa, the other side available on Kazaa.

One side shit, the other side shit.

Nothing is going to change.

This "high concept" or music on one side and movie on the other side was brought to you by the same fine people as brought you THESE fine products :
1) Soap on a rope
2) Waterproof radios for "the shower"
3) Iced coffee (yuuuuuck)
4) The Sausage McGriddle (two pancakes with sausage in the middle and syrup)
5) The self destructing DVD
6) The Net appliance / Web computer without a hard drive
and so many more fine products where you take a perfectly good idea and "improve" it til you screw it up...fubar

And if you look at a DVD wrong, you scratch it, I have never seen such a fragile media.

I think it seems to be a way for them to up the money, kinda like the goofy thing they are thinking of trying DVD's that erase themselves after 48hrs after opening them Hmmmmmmmmmm.
and not to mention scratching both sides of the disk, you can barely handle DVD's that have widescreen on one side and full screen on the other lol

It really doesn't make much sense, people buy cds so they can play them in stereo's and in the car, people buy dvds they can play on their tv and then put away in nice boxes for safe-keeping. It would be a better idea to just put both cds in the box.

wow!! such ground breaking new technology. actually doublesided discs have been around for while but why do that when you can sell 2 discs and charge double? who would want twice the junk you complained wasnt worth the price of one

If they wanna save on manufacturing costs, why not just save the $.50 or so it would cost to mass produce a disc of this sort and use the friggin INTERNET!

--oh, yeah, I forgot... they wanna be able to DRM it.
