New anti-p2p service
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on August 7, 2003 at 3:05 PM

You've got all kinds of so-called anti-piracy operators cashing in on Hollywood's paranoia by flogging them p2p-user nicks and IP addies so they can get the likes of the RIAA to issue thousands of subpoenas in their efforts to shut file sharing down.

These sue 'em all attempts are, of course, akin to whistling in the wind. But they do keep various internet bounty-hunters in business.

Said (cough, cough) anti-piracy firms crawl the nets looking for names so they can sell them for lotsa $$$. And the people behind them go blind trying to find really groovy tags - ie, MediaForce, Overpeer, MediaDefender, Ranger Online, and so on.

But one very obvious name was missing. Until now, that is.

It's (wait for it ...................) NABster. Get it? Nab?

Yes, well ...

Anway, billed as The Holy Grail Of Online Piracy Detection, it's registered to a digital audio company in PA called The PAN Network.

Enuff said.

Just another spin or twist on an ongoing campaign that seems to be picking up momentum.
If the price is right, money will buy anybody. Apparently in part, that also seems to be the case as well.

I would vote for Arnold in California if I lived there...

He is an obvious unbuyable (as could be) outsider. And he is even running as a Republican (but we ALL know he is really a moderate who would be NON-PARTY if they would let him!)

The only thing about the "Terminator" that worries me is that he might be too beholden to the HOLLYWOOD/INDUSTRY just like all the other famous and well knowns that we have been begging to get "with it!"

California needs a shake up like Arnold,
but you know what else, Arnold needs a shake up too! If WE the PEOPLE don't do anything... then even a celeb like Arnold won't do anything.

Remember, the folks we elect REPRESENT us!

We should just chisel at California's border and let it float away...They're caught in a downward spiral, I DO NOT envy the next governer of CA cause he's gonna have a horrible time trying to right all the wrongs in that state..and if they don't do it...who's gonna get blamed for it? The current governer...Most likely he's going to be republican...like the republican's need any more bad publicity...they're getting blamed for a lot of things that the democrats have fucked up...

btw, i don't know what provoked that flame on code, but if he leaves the Board for good, I'm gonna miss him. He posts a lot, but it's all good to me. Plenty of funny stuff, good techie stuff. Man, if you are still out there, and don't come back, I for one will miss ya, and I also think this effort needs people like code.
OK,that's my riff. All this guitar talk makes me wanna go play my old Epiphone and Marshall amp.

independentm just went off on him in a flame on one of the threads and told him to shut up and quit posting so much for no reason. All code did was answer with a frown and I guess he's gone, usually he has posted something by now. Gonna miss the guy. I'm pretty tech savvy, but he always had the answers when I didn't.
Sux, cause we need all the peeps we can get to help.

"MediaForce, Overpeer, MediaDefender, Ranger Online."

Nothing new really, some of these have been around for awhile. I wouldn't worry about services like these.

We all know they try to cash-in by coming up with software that scans the P2P networks. How ya think the RIAA collects its info?

meh, these companies have been scanning IP's since Napster days.

Finally, something of a win for the consumer against the corporate masters
"Supporters back away from software bill

From News.com

The key supporters of a software-licensing bill that critics say promotes corporate rights over those of consumers have, in the face of mounting opposition, decided to quit lobbying for its enactment.

The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA), drafted four years ago, is meant to protect software developers from intellectual property theft by resolving conflicting software licensing laws that vary from state to state.

But critics have complained that the proposed laws favor corporate interests over those of consumers. They say it grants software makers too much freedom in restricting the use of their products and in dictating settlement terms for conflicts. "

Code can't handle constructive criticism. I wonder how he functions outside of message boards when someone says anything that's remotely the opposite of what he thinks.
DMemberbulkeraser
Date: August 8, 2003 @ 10:37 AM
I read the flame, I just think it was telling him to shut up. To me,typing SHUT UP in caps doesn't really fallin in hte realm of constructive criticim. To be CONSTRUCTIVE criticim, it has to define a problem specifically, and address exactly what you propose as the solution. I read the flame on him more than once, and it was just a flame, and really didn't offer much specifically. I'm sure he functions well kneo...seemed to be pretty sharp, but, since he's gone, guess independentm and you should be happy:) (Smile)
I don't intend to argue this point as it seems to be a null point since he isn't here, and anyone can make snide comments behind someone's back!

I agree with Celtic. I think there are more of us that miss him, than the ones that he SOMEHOW offended, and I still don't know what he did wrong. He posted a LOT of good stuff. Answered questions, tried to make us laugh. Geeeez, they flame him for really giving a damn and talking about this RIAA stuff in a broader context.Reminds me of a paraphrase on an old saying,
"you can please all the people some of the, you can please some of the people all the time, but you can't please all the people all the time." Looks to me like there was only a couple he didn't please. I bet Bush wishes HIS ratings were that high:) (Smile).
Thanks CelticGwen, for having courage enough to say what MOST of us are thinking!

What in the HELL is going on here?

We should be on the same "side" here , RIGHT ?

Disagreements are fine , they usually lead to fruitful debates . An out-right flame , though , is un-called for.

Shmoo , I like you man , but I think you were out of line . Maybe you were having a bad day or whatever (we all do) , but we shouldn't be fighting amongst our selves . We're all in this together (or at least we should be).

We should all , put this behind us , and focus on the issues .

If our "enemies" could see this , it would be just what they wanted . Get them to fight amongst themselves , and eventually they will wither away . We need to hang together or we'll all hang seperately . (I know that's a famous quote , but my memory's bad . That's the real downside of all those pain-killers)

Don't take this the wrong way Shmoo , as I said before , I like you and value your opinions. I just think you were in the wrong for flaming Code .

I would be honored to stand beside you both in this war against our personal freedoms , and civil liberties .

Now , as for my (our) friend Code , be it known that I sincerely hope you return . I really value your knowledgeable opinions , and friendship . Besides , as a laugh , we're about the same age , and I don't wanna be the only "old fart" around here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just my two cents , and I'll shut up now PEACE

I'm with Bulk..If you don't like Code's posts, just scoll past 'em. But Schmoo musta been reading because he was obviously affected. Anyway, I think he apologized on another thread, and I've seen code posting elsewhere, too. If you dare post on the net, ya gotta be thick-skinned, anyway. Just keep on keepin' on.
and, Wabbitman, being on the same side means giving and receiving opinions..maybe even rants now and then..diversity will keep you on track...and this forum is definitely more mature than some of the silliness that I see elsewhere..that will make this forum prevail.

Kneo, you've said things I haven't liked, and I have no doubt I've said things you haven't liked, but I generally just let it slide. It's not that big a deal in my eyes, we all have our own likes and dislikes.

That flame on Code went beyond constructive criticism. The tone set by using caps was rude and uncalled for.
It was a full-on flame.

If he can't take it, well, I guess that's the breaks, thanks for pointing that out to us.

I didn't see anything wrong with his posts. But that's my opinion.

If anyone wants to flame me, go ahead and get yer jollies. I'll just laugh at you and look for ways to irritate you even more.

Seems to me people post more than once in a given thread. So? What's the beef???? Is there a posting limit here that I am unaware of? I sometimes post up to 3 times in an article. What's the big deal??? Maybe I missed somethin here. We need all the RIAA boycotters we can rally. Fighting and flaming one another his High School shit. I don't come here for that and Im sure code doesn't either.

DMemberbulkeraser

gotta agree with SinisterX. You are right man! Except for the occasional troll, that needs a comeback, we need to try to be at least civil and not scream and flame for no reason. With the government watching us, the RIAA suing everybody, at least this place needs to be a haven for likeminding people who have a common purpose.

I think it's rather interesting that no one had a problem with his posts until he started posting some good info about the rest of the behind-the-scenes activity going on re: data profiling, DRM, and "Know Your Customer".

Definitely agree. I've noticed a large range of folks here, from musicians like myself to people who don't even listen to music all that much, but don't like what's going on. I'll be the first to admit that some of my ideas (I haven't posted here much) will probably offend somebody, somewhere. If you disagree with somebody, do it with respect, and give reasons for why you disagree. I've been too many places where the response to a post is "you're wrong you (insert usually vulgar name/insult here)". No reason, no debate, just that......pure flame. As I own and run a forum for musicians, as well as a file sharing hub, I know it can be tough to moderate and prevent such things from happening....my rule is to simply give the person doing the flaming a time-out for a week, then let them come back. Just rebuilt my site, had a server crash, so I lost all the posts and most of my members...boo hoo. ;op

In other words, some folks need to grow up. I enjoy reading the posts here, and hope to continue to. I just hate weeding through the bullshit to get to the good posts, so let's keep the bullshit to a minimum, hey?
DMemberdiggit
Date: August 11, 2003 @ 1:49 PM
I personally don't mind getting flamed every once in a while...reminds me that I tend to go off at times...and that we can't all be civil 24/7. But hey, you just gotta shake it off. Sometimes when you get people who are truly insulting then flaming them right off the site is great. But CodeWarrior isn't like that anyway.
