Is the RIAA using Linux?
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on July 29, 2003 at 1:57 PM

We've heard the RIAA may be using an unlicensed Linux O/S to run its web server.

We'd call and ask if it's true, and if it is, when they plan to cough up, including a payment back-date, of course.

But we're afraid we'd only get something along the lines:

"We're NOT using Linus. And even if we were, it's free. And even if it isn't, it used to be. And anyway, we're a non-profit trade organization and we get stuff for nothing. And even if we don't, we should.

"How about if we make a donation to the RIAA Starving Artists Fund?"

So IS the RIAA using unlicensed software? And if it is, will it admit it and if it does, will the RIAA's new boss Mitch Bainwol turn himself in to the BSA's new boss Mark Floisand?

Only The Shadow knows.

In the meanwhile:

Subject: Linux 2000(tm)(r)

Dear Linux Users,

I'm pleased to announce jointly with Microsoft(tm)(r) Corporation release of Linux 2000 Professional Enterprise.

As you probably already know I'm busy with my family and I already have full-time job with Transmeta. Thus, it has been necessary for me to look for some responsible partner who would help me develop Linux.

After extensive search, I have decided upon Microsoft Corporation which has been known on market for long time from their high quality software.

Thus the upcoming Linux 2.4.0 will become Linux 2000(tm)(r).

Pricing will be determined at later time. However, I would like to take opportunity now to remind people who have unlicensed version of Linux to delete it from hard disk and then wait until official release of Linux 2000(tm)(r) will become available.

Effective April 1st 2000, midnight, all older versions of Linux are illegal under Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Linus

God I hope not linux is too cool for the RIAA.
But if they are pay up. LOL

That "e-mail" from Linus must be a joke.

Um, yes, that is a joke, and almost certainly not from Linus. For starters, his English is better than that of most Americans. Second, I've downloaded a zillion copies of the Linux kernel since April 1st 2000. For free. It still comes with a copy of the GPL.

Who ever posted this, is a moron. You do not need a license to operate Linux and that e-mail is dated April 1st. Linux is developed under the GNU (GNU is not Unix) General Public License so RIAA could use thousands of Linux boxes if they so desired.

you know there is an OS called BeOS...
I think though the RIAA is running..
BeATCH (bitch) OS...it is quirky though, endusers are required to prance, and whine and sue everyone under the sun...

Well, considering not all of us know much about Linux (or Linus for that matter), maybe "jokes" such as these should be clearly marked as such. I didn't think the e-mail above was serious, but I wasn't sure.

April 1st wasn't a clue it was a joke? Oh, I can't wait to post here next year on April Fool's Day. :) (Smile)

Jon Newton,
Here is an idea for an article. It looks like the RIAA has had a big effect on kazaa, i have seen it at about 4.7 million at lunch, and now i see 4.1 million, thats not a small drop off. Will you be writing any articles about this asap, and also, my opinion is that all this litigation is pushing ppl to go to IRC Chat and Newsgroups instead of kazaa, or just pushing ppl to get there music underground and not from the major P2P programs. What is your take?
Thanks

Fox News had had a piece around 2:30 pacific interviewing someone on the RIAA hit list; I think it was Cavuto's show. Not quite sure where the correct place to mention this is, but I figured we'd all like to know about any national coverage.

Cavuto brought up absurd cd prices and genuinely seemed against the idea of $150,000 fines. The interview itself, however, wasn't exactly flattering and certainly didn't "ignite" passions. As I know nothing about the man interviewed, I'll shut the heck up now.

Go here and read the page:

Then tell me that they are using linux to host their site.

Funny how the RIAA still refers to file sharing as "online piracy" when, in fact, piracy is selling copies of copyrighted material for a profit. Unauthorized sharing is, technically, "copyright infringement" but I guess that doesn't sound as ominous as "piracy". Shiver me timbers and a "Yo, ho, ho!".

To date, I've seen a couple dozen articles and several newscasts concerning the RIAA lawsuits and every one of them was either neutral or against the RIAA. Does anyone anywhere support what the RIAA is doing? With enough negative publicity about this, politicians may want to distance themselves from the RIAA's latest tactics. It could all backfire on the RIAA if they lose political support.

TST-SECURE-OS well i could be wrong,i know there was a report that they were running win2003 server...

More likely, the TST-Secure-OS is a disguised version of Microsoft IIS 6.0. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has remodeled its "Hide the Web site" game into a "Hide the Web server" contest.

I don't know where else to post this, so why not here. I have a list of people who went after Napster just like the RIAA is going after Kazaa and other p2p's. Why, may I ask, are these listed below not taking the RIAA's side and sueing or taking p2p's to court also?

A & M Records
Metallisucks,Metallicops, whatever
Andre Young
Matthew Katz
Platinum Entertainment
Leiber
Casanova Records
Teevee toons
National Academy
Emusic.com
Sport Service Inc
Copyright.net
Radio Spirits, Inc
Academy of Motion Picture Art & Sciences
Fonovision
Razor and Tie Entertainment,LLC
Rawcus Entertainment,LLC
Montfort
Centerpointe Research Institute,Inc

Did these people get sick of the court scene, go bankrupt, realize that they suck when they try to ruin progress, or make peace with themselves and go plant some trees?
No, I don't think so. I do think that they can see a sinking ship at sea though. I have searched and searched through PACER, and when I look up these "piracy" lawsuits, how come I only see RIAA listed as the plaintiff?
I am not a pc buff, but I do know when you have a lot of speculation, and no support, there is something wrong with your program, and it needs to be fixed or thrown in the trash and forgotten. The RIAA needs to rethink its game plan(as we have all said), and try to actually think for a change....but then again, either way, that's all they will end up with after this...a few pennies in change.
Thnx for listening ;p

You are correct.. There was a article somewhere that mentioned that they just recently changed servers. I think it was mentioned on slashdot. How ever most of they guys there if I remember correctly had doubts that they even upgraded to winserver 2003.

appropriate comments from Dr. Strangelove...(Replace the word commie with RIAA)
speaking about the lawsuits...
"Well, I've been to one worlds fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones."

"Your Commie(RIAA) has no regard for human life. Not even his own."
--General Ripper
on Kazaa:
"I don't think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip-up."
--General Turgidson
On our need for proper media coverage:
"Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines."
--General Turgidson

On the boycott and denying the RIAA our money...
"I do deny them my essence."

On a message to Cary:
"I think you're some kind of deviated prevert. I think General Ripper found out about your preversion, and that you were organizing some kind of mutiny of preverts. Now move!"

The email is certainly a joke, and while the whole thing may have been an attempt at humor, the war has been started against Linux with the intent of brining it down. SCO claims that IBM illegally put Unix code into linux. Of course, you can read all about it yourself at http://news.com.com/2009-1016_3-1010644.html

I'll pay the "RIAA starving artist" fund for some of the female pop stars to eat. (Some of them are just damn annorexic) It's interesting how the RIAA violates its own moral godly piracy code.
