RIAA Hit List
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on July 25, 2003 at 3:41 PM

Tech Live staff have been trawling for subpoena names and they've developed an impressive list.

"All subpoenas, incidentally, are being served by the Los Angeles law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp," says the say. "A total of 253 RIAA subpoenas were listed as of July 22 through the federal court system's paid online database, PACER. The actual subpoenas are available to view online in about half the cases.

"The court documents don't show individual users' real names. They do show file-sharing network user names, the user's ISP, the user's IP address, and a sampling of copyright songs the user allegedly made available for download. To date, many ISPs have been contacted, including Pac Bell Internet, SBC, Charter Communications, Comcast, Adelphia, RCN, and Time Warner."

You'd no doubt like to know if you're featured. So here they are:

Sounds more like a witch-hunt, if you ask me.

Doubtless, the RIAA will next ask that users with such addresses be given the death penalty. As they'd likely say, "The only good P2P file-sharer . . . is a DEAD file sharer." Stay tuned.

I want on the list! How do I get on there? Should I rename all my band's tunes to RIAA tunes? (I really don't wanna, but maybe I should so when I get sued for "hosting" an m&m tune I can counter sue?)

I have a question:

The ACCOPS bill is trying to make file-sharing an automatic felony.

But, copyright infringement where over 10 copies or a value of $2,500 is already a felony.

So, say you were sharing 35 files. Can't you now be charged with a felony? Even before this bill passes?

Does anyone think they will bring criminal charges up against this first round of people? Right now they are civil suits, correct?

Once upon a time there was this country which was forced to buy tea from a company from another country...One day that country decided that it was fed up with paying a tax on tea...

Sony, and I'm sure a few others, are based in other countries. Price gouging is worse than taxing.

The artists might suffer for a short while, but they offer a service, and so do the engineers, which leaves the rest as not needed.

It is one thing to respect artists...It's another thing to stand around and let a witch hunt happen.

The people have spoken, and yet they refuse to listen, silly rabbit.

I won't download "illegal" music, and I won't buy any more music. I won't pay for their lawsuits, I won't pay to have them put other people in jail. Anyone that buys a cd is promoting their behavior.

Any artists knows that the money is in the tours, not the cd's. Its the exposure they get from selling so many cds that when they go touring, they sellout everywhere. Most record deals make the artists pay back the recording costs anyways; they loan the money and take it back as they start selling. What they do is over price the recording so that they can stiff the artists. Anyone says that the RIAA is doing this for the artists has never seen a record deal (the fine print). Why do you think there are so many lawsuits from artists aimed at their former label?

How long must we endure these fat cats creating a "red scare" because they are losing revenue because they have been releasing krap for a while? We have been in a recession.

Lists such as the previous one really make the hair on my back stand up.

I'll shut up on this note that I would love to see the feds audit any of the recording companies.

Hold off 4 a bit to hear the complete list. Tech TV might be slow station, but not as slow as the ones sleeping with R/MIAA. Also its impossible for them to look more like jackasses. Its like saying gold could be more like gold when its 24 carrots, right?

Hey any news about Winmx, all I see is
Kazaa . will I hope this thing backfires
at the RIAA , Boy this gives me memories of the 1980's Sony betamax case from Jack V's MPAA. look what happend there. he lost.

the RIAA is a joke, but a serious one at the that....yes we need a boycott but we also need a better network (Than fasttrack) that the RIAA cant track. So as the RIAA gets harder on us...we are also becoming harder to get. A IP blocker add on for kazaa would be nice....for all those programmers out there! we can beat this shit....peace

I've got this simple idea and i am going to spread it..., i don't know enough about linux but i know one thing the networks they use to get these ip addresses are susceptible to attack (flooding etc..) why not make a program that people can download that bombs the mpaa and riaa networks and a list is distributed to these machines perhaps the program could be shared via the filesharing networks... even if only a few thousend users used a program like this their plan would come to a grinding halt .....
Advancedgoldenpi
Date: July 26, 2003 @ 4:04 AM
BSHroot: I looked into the idea. The problem is finding and coordinateing the attack. It could be done, but not sustained for very long, and you could only attack one network at a time. I suggest one of the bot companies.

Have they subpoened any users from p2ps other than Kazaa? I've seen others mentioned in articles but I haven't heard whether the RIAA has started sending out subpoenas to any of their users yet.
Intermediatesurfside6

I find it interesting that if you patent something you only enjoy protection for 14 or so years. If you create a drug that helps folks you get only 20 or so years of protection. If you copyright a song I belive you get protection forever (thanks to "I got you babe" Sonny Bono). Something is definitely wrong here, Congress is feasting at the RIAA/MPAA donations trough. This is going to take the Supreme Court to straighten this mess out. Support the EFF and like organizations!!!!

To petehoganwppc and Demonofthefall...
It seems like al of the subpoenas are coming from kazaa, grokster, and fileshare. I haven't seen a thing about winmx in any article I've ever seen. Does anyone know why though? Maybe they're just focusing on two or three p2p networks at a time. Who knows what's going through those little clockwork minds of theirs...

Let's just use our combined power to put ALL the arsheholes out of business...for the politicos, vote em out. For RIAA and MPAA, to show solidarity, do NOT , at LEAST for August, buy any CDs (unless you know absolutely they are not part of the RIAA network of artists/labels) and do NOT go to any movies (except Indies ). Let's show them in August what we think of their actions in June and July.

AAAAY..MEN!!!CodeWarrior...Remember the legal history of the tobacco industry? They had a crapload of lawyers, lobbyist, and congress in their pocket..and they were arrogant as hell! And..bit by bit that came unravelled, even though it took thousands of lawsuits to bring it about...And even though that issue is unresolved and ongoing, at least witness the process. I say this in the hope of killing and backtracking this RIAA mess. I truly believe it can be done. See the post about "Snapster," to check out the forward thinking of people who are determined to change things for the betterment of us all. So onward, dmusicites! Don't let RIAA legal blustering slow your determination to boycott, organize, register, and VOTE!! And, surfside6, it takes a long time and a lot of lawyers to get to the supreme court. If we all vote, this could be over NEXT YEAR!

There's a link to eff.org's action page, I'm wondering how many people have clicked that link and taken action. It's hard for me to know how many people are actually taking action on this.

It would be heartening to find out how real our fight really is, or if we're just blowing hot air by saying we're winning this battle.

Most people I talk to think that we're wrong and just don't think what the RIAA is doing is a big deal because they're not downloading music. And I think the reason why most people will side with the RIAA is because they're the one running the ads, they're the ones who own the TV stations and can say what they want on those stations. We have no mainstream media presence. How many people are getting our message? How many would agree with it? In the end, our representatives are the only ones who can actually make a real impact in fighting the RIAA. We don't need symbolic gestures at this point, we need the weight of the american people to push their representatives in government to demand hearings on P2P and copyright. And I'd really like to see how many of us have done this. I'd like to see numbers. How many of us are really in this fight.

I'm not planning on buying any cd's this august either, but I'd like to know (in numbers) how many others are in this boycott.

I'd also like to see a boycott-riaa presence on Kazaa, if they've 2 million people online at any given moment, shouldn't they be aware of this fight, and given a link to the eff.org and boycott-riaa action plans? How many hits would the "contact your representatives" link get then?

Every now and then I have to wonder if all of us are just mumbling in a darkened room to ourselves. I want to see the RIAA sweat under a congressional inquiry. I'd like to know that 2 million people demanded that inquiry. I want the kind of media scrutiny on this issue that the false claims in the state of the union address is getting.

Call me this forum's worry wart.

zaziethekitten is right, that would eventually kick in the issuance of a bench warrant, probably by the US Marshall since it is federal case.
And, I do each and every EFF action, and have for a long time. It's easy.
And, we ARE winning. Sony corp is hurting from Charlies Angels 2 and another movie being bombs/duds. Music sales are hitting the floor, even before this they were closing LOTS of stores...Sam Goody and Sound Wherehouse. AOL Time/Warner is currently under investigation by the Feds I believe, and if even HALF of us stop buying CDs in August, they are gonna be hurting like anything...I mean really bad..and they are gonna be hemorrhaging money in shyster fees, court fees, etc. The less money you spend on "Big 5" related sales and services, the more they are gonna hurt.
I am telling you...we can shut these puppies down if we just save our money on things for a year, and think before we spend bucks. Sony is on my boycott list as is AOL/Time Warner big time.
And for goodness sake...BEWARE OF CLEAR CHANNEL..THEY ARE THE SILENT SATAN!
