WTF?
Posted by AdvancedJon Newton in on June 28, 2003 at 4:30 PM

Remember when Madonna tried stop file-swappers from trading tracks from her 'American Life' album by planting 'dummy' files on Kazaa?

The mp3's were full length and looked real. But only the first few seconds had sound - namely, Our Lady asking 'What the fuck do you think you're doing?'

WTF?

Irresistable.

So iriXx and John von Seggern didn't resist

Boycott-RIAA, in the meanwhile, had started a contest for musicians to turn WTF into tracks. Boycott founder Bill Evans says, "We got loads of reponses and they're all on the site at boycott.dmusic.com.

"Digital Cutup Lounge John von Seggern's was, I think, the first one in and then iriXx did a track. In the meantime, I'd asked John if I could put his mix up at Boycott and it turned into a contest."

The tracks inevitably led to a dedicated website called the Madonna Remix Project which flashed. And within a week, MRP was HOT internationally with global headlines and air-time on CNN.

Ultimately, it all led to Yep. A WTF album.

iriXx now maintains the Madonna Remix Project website and the UK's bLiP records has just produced an album featuring mixes of original submissions with tracks by guest artists such as Digital Cutup Lounge, ALT, Zippy Bunghole and the Rainbows of Light, DZ, Moribund, FL4t, Steve 'The Piss' Macq-uillen.

AND IT'S FKN MARVELLOUS. NO KIDDING !

Say no more.

Just go to justablip for downloads, or MRP for details, and more.

I just listened to some of the tracks they had available on their album for free DL and they are F--KING AWESOME! Maybe Justablip oughta send Madonna a free copy, just to show how stupid her "WTF" move really was.

Anyone think she can sue? How would it be possible? She willingly put it out on a public network without any notice of copyright. Wouldn't that void any grounds for protection, implied or not?

Tauisgod,

Actually, under most recording contracts, the record company (in Madonna's case, Virgin, I think) actually owns ANYTHING she records. So in essence, yes, they do own that copyright because her voice is more than likely part of that common contract.

They do that to keep Madonna from going to EMI or another company to record "Good music", while she fulfills her contract with her current pimp-style recording company.

But then, we're talking Madonna. Haven't heard good music from her since the 80's.

What would she sue for? The songs would be considered paradies, and as long as no one sells the remixes or tries to profit from them, she has no lawsuit.
