Protect Yourself From The RIAA Borg
Posted by AdvancedBill Evans in on June 26, 2003 at 1:42 PM

The latest version of PeerGuradian is 1.97 and can be found at http://xs.tech.nu/ This will help you to block incoming traffic from the RIAA, MPAA and known "mercanary" companies who do the RIAA's dirty work for them. If someone invades your home you have the right to defend yourself. If someone invades your computer you have the same right. Set up your defensive perimeter today..

Now that I've downloaded this how would I know they're snooping on me?

Is anyone confident that the latest version of PeerGuardian will protect you from the hundreds of RIAA spies?

Hell, everyone should have PeerGuardian, even if you DON'T file-share.

I mean, you'd protect yourself from them just like any other hacker, right?

This site has LOADS of resources. The IP address converter is the best. Convert one programs IP list to the format of another.
Sygate is the firewall I've had the best results with. It's easy to add a large ranges of blocked IPs in one step, and it's free. This makes it very popular with many people who compile blocklists.

Bob's block list is a use list of bad IPs. It's more focused on spammers, but also has RIAA and MPAA freinds on there. Just use the IP converter at http://www.bluetack.co.uk/ to change the list into a format for your firewall or P2P app.

The very bottom has nice trick. Go to your C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory and open a file called "hosts" with notepad. Then copy the list off the bottom of the page and into that file. Now MANY in page web advertisings won't be shown. This can be a big time saver if you have a dialup connection.

I have the "Zone Alarm" firewall installed on my computer and I have it set on "stealth" mode. Will that keep me anonymous while using P2P software?

sccpink,

No, that won't do anything. You allow access with P2P. The RIAA/MPAA use scanning programs that access your computer just like someone tryong to d/l from you. Zone Alarm won't be able to tell the difference. If your using Kazaa Lite, set it so users can't browse your files for one. (Search for Kazaa Lite if you don't have it)

PeerGuardian actually blocks traffic from addresses in the list. No matter how they try and get in. So any attempt to access your computer from IP address X.X.X.X will be blocked.

Alternatevely you can use something like www.slsk.org. Set that to only share with people in your list. Then you talk to people in chat rooms, and add them to your list. Then only people you added can access your stuff. Hope that helps.

1) bluetack's converter rules. I helped the guy make it work with Opera. :D (Big Grin)

2) PG's list is limited. There are many more. http://cvs.suche.org/horde/chora/co.php/ip.prefix?r=1.39&Horde=09f6fc48543a5e4423731b25a1f38987 , http://home.netvigator.com/~ggbbchu/ipfilter.dat , in emule format, but they don't work with the converter(look up filter level in emule FAQ).

3) Just dump the IPs in your firewall... it's a lot better than having a slower external program do it.
