Besides having the effect of systematically bringing our standard of living further and further down to that of the most primitive Third World slave states, the Orwellian-Stalinist DMCA may also have had a negative impact on the overall performance of the stock market. No sooner did the RIAA start going after Napster, for example, than the NASDAQ index began its precipitous fall from around the 5,000 level in 2000 to around 1,600 today. And, of course, the Dow going down from 11,700 (approx.) to the 9,000 level it hovers around today (this, after a low of 7,500 or thereabouts almost a year ago). The first manifestations of this festering sore of a vendetta also coincided with the government's anti-trust lawsuit against Microsoft, another action which has been cited by some as a factor in this stock market decline.

Finally! A histroy of the Infamous DMCA which has caused so many average people more of a headache than 40 tax returns thrown at them at once.

It's interesting to see the rundown, as it includes not just music but Sony's gaming division, and several electronics companies as well as the line "Prevention Agastin Peer to Peer Piracy."

The DMCA is something I would expect the KGB or Communist China to impliment--not the USA where the first constitutional amendment is labeled as "Freedom of Speech" which is clearly being taken away from us.

I have hated the DMCA from day one, but I hate it even more every time a giant corperation hides behind it.

Also consider the fact that I used to download a song from an artist and then buy the CD, or several CD's before late 2000 and early 2001, when the RIAA started raising CD Prices to the point that they were unaffordable for many. I had a 56k modem when I started using a P2P network and the reason I could sit for an hour to get a Download was because if I dind't, I wuld never have the song anyway since I couldn't afford the CD, and the people hurt, in the case of what I download are not the artists but the RIAA who shot themselves in the foot!

CD sales aren't "Declining" because of P2P networks, they're declining because people can't afford the higher prices, and raisng them, while sheilding yourself with the DMCA is only making things worse.

The DMCA is a disgrace and I can honestly say whenever there was a petition to stop the DMCA, my name would be on it.
