DMusic to expand world coverage of Indie music & open source.
Posted by Bluegrassleflaw in on June 11, 2003 at 6:11 PM

DMusic is embarking on an ambitious undertaking to help spread the truth about indie music and its fight against intellectual property monopolies (including copyright and patent pools) that threaten freedom of speech and creatvity. Besides our traditional emphasis on promoting independent music and the arts, we will be focused on the need for copyright reform, privacy legislation, preserving open source and the public domain, more trust busting, the evils of neofascist "globalization" efforts, erosion of civil rights, price fixing and anti-consumer behavior, and the importance of peer to peer networks.

Society has always had art to separate us from the animals. But art (and literature) can be corrupted for political ends (Richard Wagner and Leni Riefenstal in the 1930's, Merle Haggard's "Oakie from Muskogee" in the 1960's/70's, MTV supporting Clinton/Gore in the 1990's, the RIAA, the Recording Artists Coalition and Lars Ulrich v. peer to peer networks currently are only a few examples.) DMusic believes that only through a truly independent artist movement will civilized society progress. If we leave it to the lawyers and accountants and scientists and politicians, we are all doomed. It is time for the re-emergence of the poet/warriers and the philospher/kings. These traits exist in some way in all of us and must be emphasized, promoted and expanded. It is time to rise and cast the Philistines out of the temple.

We have started preliminary arrangements for syndication of our newsfeeds to over 50 websites and local newspapers. Watch for more developments. We are also starting a DMusic Radio network.

This will not take away our emphasis on Independent music - indeed it will expand it!
We are into DIY in a big way. This whole site is DIY ( - ok, no jokes from the peanut gallary :) )

Hang on for the ride. For those of you who just got into life's highway, this is just like the sixties all over again. Self empowerment over monolitic corporate abusers, novel solutions for difficult problems, listening to the young and the old, and cross cultural influences - all that stuff exists right here and right now. Welcome aboard. Leave your 20th century preconceptions behind.

Is that the new logo? It just looks so...professional. You could be a 1980's conglomerate corporation.

We are actually an 1880's style commune.

I'd rather be a 1780's brewer dressing up like a 1680's native american, dumping CDs into boston harbor.

I'd rather be an 18th century plantation owner growing tea.

Hey, with a tiny bit of rewording, this would look very nice on a Mission Statement page. Nodding

With technology making home recording easier all an indepentant artist needs is some promotion and distrubution. Dmusic is a great way for some 'net promotion, and the Dmusic Store is a good distrubutor. Now if only Dmusic can get an indie's CD to those retailers on that list (The open letter to the Eagles)

What happened to that amazingly great one that popped up the last time we had this argument?

I hate to pop in and complain, but isn't the logo the least of the issues we need to argue about? What about all of the rest of the original post? This is all good.

The world backdrop is a bit of a cliché, methinks.

Looks vaguely like the old SNL Saturday Night Update logo, honestly. The IDEA behind it is good, but a logo isn't terribly important. Nodding
