DMusic asks for your help. HELP!
Posted by Worldleflaw in on April 21, 2003 at 12:10 PM

HELP! We have just ordered THREE new servers that cost us $15,000 and have started another $2000.00 per month collocation rack, this time with separate database, webservers and file servers, a prerequisite for scalability (growth). We are here to stay, and we want to stay as free as we can for as long as we can. We debated about charging for the site, and are working on some things (don't expect free UNLIMITED uploads forever guys) but decided instead to ask you to ---

DONATE TO OUR SERVER FUND! Anything at all over $5.00 . More equipment, more bandwidth, more people. Remember - this affects the entire independent digital music movement. We also host Boycott-riaa.com, Gnutella.com, Gnutellanews.com, LesterChambers.com, TheCoasters.com, and others (who we do not charge) just to spread the word about independent music freedom from copyright tyranny, and the fun and joy of interactive music making ( I think thats what we are doing, besides everything else). It also affects Marksolomonmd.com and noticenetwork.com, but thats another story.

Send Money. We already have Lawyers and guns (thats from a song title - you can't even be sarcastic these days). We take PayPal, Visa/MC, checks, cash, money orders, donations of equipment (computers, musical instruments, cars - anything that we can use or sell on ebay), volunteers for nonpaid internships, and other creative ways to support the community.

We will have a form up a day or so (if somebody will help me with it!) and will keep you posted on progress.

BTW, our address ---

"$5000 a server? Damn!"
I've built a £7000 one at work once (the case alone was £700, and the raid card was about the same!). Was I careful with that one Scared
Servers be veeeery expensive.

I'll throw $10 in the right direction. Nodding

Yes, you _can_ build an expensive server, but you don't necessarily _need_ to. The DMusic streaming puts them a long way toward needing to, I'm sure, but I'd wonder what the costs would look like broken down...
Advancedmtekk

well let's just take a SCISI HardDrive in concideration...

36GBs cost over $200, each server has at least two not including raid, so there is about $1000 in HD's alone !! well it's around $800 sum, then the case is expencive, the chips arn't cheep either, an xeon which is the one they most likely contain costs more than $300 each times that by two or three that's about another $1000, memory of 1024MB ECC costs over $300, and then there are still more stuff in it that cost allot of money.

a internet connection is also expencive, T1 runs about $1000 a month, T3 is even more expencive...

great points, mtekk! sure showboat, maybe they could have skimped on a few things, but the site is growing and they've got to be able to handle it. even if they had managed to save $500 per server (and for all i know, maybe they did), that's still a huge expenditure. to me, sending in $5 or $10 is tiny compared to the rush of creativity i've had since i joined about a week ago.

but hey, the whole idea of donations is that those who wish to participate can do so voluntarily, as much or as little as they choose and/or can.

you guys, count me in. :) (Smile)

At this point we needed
dual xeon processors 2.4 gig
2 gigs of ram
redundant power supply
5x73 gig scsi raid 5
3u rack with 4 point rails.

what do you figure that costs? I'm sick up building a new athlon clone box for $2500 every month. We got plenty of them. As a mater of fact

DMUSIC USED SERVER SALE!!!
1 HP netserver dual 500 meg pentium 3 / 3u server with 512 megs of ECC ram,
1 hot swappable 18 gig seagate barracuda scsi, plus 4 hot swap bays.

make me an offer - I need a car!!

If I could afford for myself a new computer, much less a xeon -- much, much less a dual xeon -- then maybe I'd have something left over.

We tried the cheap server route also. You get what you paid for. Ever see a kernel panic?

Cheaper servers?? Irked
Disappointed

I think some people need to start respecting what one man and a large group of supporters and admin eally do for this place and all the artist and members that are here. I can't say I agree with 2FACEUPTDC AT ALL!! so I will act like I didn't see that ..

But whoever got the idea for the dancing guy...

You are frikken awesome!!
I love it!! It's loud! In your face, distracting and exactly what I would have wanted to see happen! Props to someone!! Thumbs Up Nodding

Date: April 9, 2003 @ 1:06 AM
Yeah, I love it, too. It's kinda funny.

Leflaw -- It would be much more annoying if we had to watch him dance real slow. You could gradually speed him up in proportion to how much cash you've raised.

So when you have enough money, we get to laugh at the dancing guy again.

Cause it's funny as hell.

couple of things

- tofaceuptdc's cheap server approach is valid - lots of cheap inexpensive boxes is the route that Google uses, for example. But we are beyond one box. We are up to six servers right now. We aint playin.

- We wanted the ability to increase capacity quickly - meaning industry standard servers. Handbuilt stuff takes too long, especially in an emergency.

- Bandwidth is also costing more as we expand. I guess thats good, sort of.

I say to make a dmusic cd and us all the money to fund the site and hate to say it Leflaw but you have got to left the bigboys help out. You need some big sponsers here. $5 here $10 there is just not gonna do it. We need Dmusic T-shirts ,Hats,Jackets to sell and make money for the site and if you had merchandise that said Band the IRAA they would probably sell. Let's star putting on Dmusic shows or have a record label of only Dmusic artists.A Dmusic Radio station would be nice WWDM FM. Bring in yhe pop up ads and the advertisers just like the other sites do. You only do this to keep your site going who cares if they get business or not. Think about the big picture you could bring the major industry down single handedly with enough voices behind you!

Don't forget also that 'proper' server hardware is more expensive for a good reason - it's designed to be used 24/7 wheras consumer level gear isn't.

Hey leflaw - I'm curious about your hosting contract and the cost for your hosting and bandwith. I help run a hosting service in NJ that does high-speed dedicated hosting, and I'd like to know if you'd be interested in a competing quote. In light of what you folks are trying to accomplish, and the fact that I hate the music cartel's monopoly as much as the rest, I might be able to help you out at least on the backend to maybe cut your costs. If you want to talk, send me an e-mail or note.

how about a donation "ticker" like on http://www.mame.dk/ ?
DMemberWeedWhacker
Date: April 19, 2003 @ 1:49 AM
I know donation-based services need critical-mass before everything starts working, but since I'm not an artist, but a listener, I'm hesitant to start throwing checks at dmusic. (On a side note, the "artists" that I've seen screaming about 'you'd better not even -think- about charging me for anything at all!' make me mad. After all, dmusic is trying to HELP artists.)

Point being, if many others are donating and actually starting to help defray costs, then that encourages others, like myself, to start doing so as well. I look at the $15,000 + $2000/mo mark (as reasonable as that is for quality servers) and think, 'whoa... my $5/10/20/50 isn't going to even make a scratch in that figure. Oh well.' However, if there's a group of others that are pitching in... well, I won't repeat myself. It's a psychological thing.

We are approaching $1,000 in donations!!!!!! A Great Start!!! Lets keep going, so we can get more bandwidth and processing power to push the revolution onward!!!!
