Irc for d'mers
IRC stands for internet relay chat, and it is as the name suggests a chat system, similar to other IM's (Internet Messengers such as ICQ,msn, aol, etc..) with a few differences. The main difference is that in order to join a chat, although you can be invited to a room when you're connected to the network, you can also simply surf to it, provided you know which one, and where it is found. This walk through is intended for the average d'mer to use so they can get connected with as few hassles as possible. Before continuing, I should warn you that irc is a system that has been adopted by hackers for many purposes, so it is pretty much manditory if you like your computer to get a decent firewall, and if anything does go wrong, don't blame me cos I never wrote the software.
The first thing you need to do is get an irc client. It doesn't really matter which one you use, but 3 popular ones and a little about each is listed below
mirc -
http://www.mirc.com/ - possibly the most stable of clients
Trillian -
http://www.ceruleanstudios.com - This is fast becoming the next thing in the IM world because it supports 5 different IM's, including irc, and all at the same time.
Chatzilla -
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/rt-messaging/chatzilla/- This irc client runs with the browser software, Mozilla.
...Okay, now that you have an irc client installed, the first thing you'll need to do is set it up. Choose a username and password... you will either be asked these details, or you'll need to find the part where you can put one in. These allow you to re-log into secure chats as the same person.
Next, you need to point it to a server and connect to it. You will need to add the dmusic server to the connect list... In mirc (still part of setup window), you can turn the new server window function on, then press add server - fill in description - Dmusic, Irc Server - irc.dmusic.com, leave the port as 6667, and make the Group Dmusic.
Connect to the server.
If all goes well, you should get a list of channels or rooms on the server. If it doesn't do it by itself, you can do so by entering the following command
/list
Join the channel called #dmusic, or alternatively, type
/join #dmusic
okay... you're in the chatroom, and now that yer here, you need to register with the chat room so that it knows who you are (if this document says PASSWORD or NICK anywhere from here on in, then substitute it for your irc password or nickname that you've made up). To register, we type
/msg nickserv register PASSWORD
after that if we ever want to sign back in, we type
/msg nickserv identify PASSWORD
Finally, if you ever get set up as an op or admin for the chat room, once signed in, you should be able to change your userlevel to op with the following...
/msg chanserv op #dmusic NICK
... Only the room's controller/owner specify's who gets admin status.
No all that remains to be done is to get yer butts up there and talk to the beautiful peeople.
:splitspin: I'll race ya'll there :transport:
