Gnutella Network "Civil War"
Posted by AdvancedExpo in on February 16, 2003 at 12:16 PM

As we know, and can admit, the gnutella network has never been so good to begin with. Low quality files, if the file you were looking for, could even be found on the network.

Yet, this little escepade seems to be ramming it into the ground more; the makers of BearShare are giving reason to ban shareaza from the network. Here are the reasons, stated by Vinnie Falco, developer of BearShare;

"- Misappropriation of gnutella2.com. The developer(s) of Shareaza had time to correct this indiscretion, but that time has expired.

- Lack of specifications regarding MP. The developer(s) agreed to publish some specifications but there are not. As a consequence, we must rely on their accurate description on the behavior of MP servents in a mixed world (in other words, one which includes Gnutella servents such as BearShare). Unfortunately, the developer's track record(s)is/are very poor and therefore not trustworthy.

- Observed excessive network re-querying. This has been brought to the developer's(s') attention but nothing has been done about it. They have not acknowledged the defect or corrected it.

- Greedy network behaviors. Raphael has documented evidence that MP Ultrapeers are not as effective as non-MP Ultrapeers, conferring an artificial "advantage" (not sure if there really is one) to MP searches.

- Negative marketing efforts, and fragmenting the Gnutella network. The developer, through silence, encourages hostilities between users of the various Gnutella servents. This hurts the network and stifles growth for everyone. Furthermore, the developer(s) take everyone opportunity to deprecate Gnutella (a brand which many dedicated individuals have spent countless man-hours building up). Despite this, the developer(s) continue to TAKE resources from the very network they are deprecating.

- Communication obstacles. The developer(s) of Shareaza do not maintain an open dialog with the rest of the community. It is commonly agreed that this behavior is damaging for the network. We have already seen a lack of communication's negative effects with Qtrax and Morpheus. Even worse, the developer(s) let the users be the mouthpiece of the application (specifically, Anenga).

- Irresponsible development. The developer(s) release products and then go on vacation, become unresponsive, or become otherwise unavailable. They lack the resources for sufficient testing, but have the chutzpah to release a piece of code that can have a significant impact on other vendor's servents. This is dangerous for everyone.

Gnutella already sucks, and greedy idiots like Vinnie are making it worse.

Trying to regulate a community such as gnutella is a paradoxical ideal.

And what's with all this bullshit about the "Misappropriation of gnutella2.com"? This is a contradiction in terms because you can't misappropriate gnutella, or anything intrinsically related to it.

How can anyone, for instance, say that stealing the gnutella logo is wrong, or even stealing? It's a logical absurdity when viewed in the context of gnutella.

I would expect more from a developer.

-

If someone wants to develop something on a platform that's all about "free information", and "open source", how can anyone who claims to be "for it", say that doing so is wrong? Regardless of the circumstances?

This idiots going against everything gnutella stands for. He's putting his foot in his mouth. It's reminiscent to the recent stories of the government arresting people for publishing information that complies with the infringing laws of the neo-Millennium Copywrite Protections Act: trying to stop people from publishing information, regardless of the information.

I could go on and on as the parallels are distrubing. What this guys trying to do is just so back-asswords! (to summarise :) (Smile)

Gnutella is a piece of *crap*. I always just try it just for the hell of it, and I get crap from it, ad when I do get something, rarely, it'll be 128k and'll go at 2K... what a waste of time.

You Go Vinnie!

Let's come to an educated understanding.
Anyone who has worked with Ethernet TCP/IP networks knows your protocols and programming must match up or you get un-necessary traffic, and even worse, instability, problems sharing, and even security holes that allows the RIAA to find YOU!.
You can't simply say that if something works, it's good enough. You must strive to make them better. If you know of a problem with an application, it is the programmers duty to correct them.
If you thought file sharing sucked, it's because you were using the WRONG cleint.

Wake up people, just because you are an avid programmer, and can make a filesharing program work, doesn't mean you need to make Gnutella2 without talking to people about it. It should be a gathering of developers. Especially with as many people are involved.

Even in Chaos there is order....
