Information on Soulseek
February 4, 2003
Thomas Mennecke

For the last 24 hours, the popular Soulseek network and website has been unavailable to its wide userbase. Because their host cache uses the same IP address as their web server (Shareaza revisited), the network is not accessible. Information gathered by Napjunk.com reports that the lone operator of Soulseek, Nir, is simply switching web hosts. From Napjunk

steve says: Hey, I've had several users e-mail me and msg me on AIM/MSN asking if Soulseek was down, since a lot of users seem to be having problems connecting to the network. Was wondering if ya could tell me what’s up so i can have something to tell them other than "i don’t know, check back later to see if we find anything out"

Nir Says: Yeah, it's gonna be down for about three days. We're switching providers.

News as to why Nir is switching web hosts remain unclear. There are unconfirmed threads stating that the RIAA has filed an injunction against Soulseek. If you read German, you can also find more information on this on the unofficial Soulseek forum: here. We have emailed Nir, and hope to provide resolution to this situation in the near future.

Soulseek has become wildly popular in the P2P world. Its fast, reliable network, coupled by a wide variety of dance, techno and house music, has made this community one of the best kept P2P secretes.

Please update your site to cover the recent injunction.... all i have as of now is this message from 'nir' the man behind soul seek:

From the German SLSK forum:

Nir schrieb am 04.02.2003 um 23:23: - löschen
I would like to tell you that it is true that RIAA has gotten an injunction
to temporally shut me down. I am looking to move my server to other parts of
the world where the RIAA will not have as much control over this. But for
the near future SoulSeek will be down

Thank you for your patients and support. SoulSeek will live on!

NIR

Direct Connect is going to be the next big thing...

Why, is it so bad that SoulSeek got shut down?
what's so bad about KaZaA?
and why is direct connect going to be the "next best thing"
i've never even heard of it
all my friends use KaZaA they got millions of users, and you can find what you want
you people confuse me sometimes

KaZaA's files usually aren't the best quality

And Direct Connect is gonna be the next biggest thing because it's people running their own servers within a network, rather than a large group suh as Shareman(IE KazAa) running them. That way nobody can be put to blame or shut down. Is the RIAA going to hunt down every user who runs a server that people can connect to and host files? They are only going after the big dogs right now.

well tuna, then you should read more of the articles and replies. Just because you've never heard of it doesn't mean it can't be on the horizon now does it? I never heard of SoulSeek until about two weeks ago, and I have to agree, it was(is?) a great file sharing program.Kazaa is on the block with verizon (well, by proxy anyhow. Direct Connect also can/does mean connecting YOU and someone elses computer DIRECTLY.. most commonly on IRC, but with DALnet saying they won't let file sharing go on anymore.. it'll have to be discreet. DALnet sucks anyhow. Point is.. read up so you're not so confused.

how about someone throw up some good links about the new generation of p2p being developed that might be invincible to shut down by the RIAA or any so called authority. A quick google didn't get me any good information. something thats being worked on to give all of us hope that p2p freedom will always be around. If kazaa goes down it will be a big blow to a lot of people. And frankly i think were all worried about p2p in the coming months.

>>about p2p in the coming months.

i know i am, even though there's other methods of downloading media - although i do use kazaa more than IRC and direct connect.

R.I.P., soulseek :_(

"us people", tuna? Who are we? If it weren't for "us" you wouldn't know about your kazaa either.
Soulseek is faster than kazaa, free of spyware (and yes I know about kazaa lite), kazaa doesnt work from my dorm and from many other schools apparently, whereas soulseek did. They had a better selection of rarer/independent artists, even in their beginning, for those of us who want a little more than mainstream. However they also had a decent selection of mainstream music. I first started using soulseek last june after audiogalaxy was shut down, along with a bunch of other p2ps including kazaa, blubster and limewire. Soulseek was far better and less aggravating than the others, so I gave up on them and carried on with soulseek.

As for other p2p networks, there's a new one called filespree (www.filespree.com)... it kind of sucks right now because it needs more people, more files... but the interface is nice, it's also spyware free... looks promising. Check out the site, they sell it better than me... Also check out www.slyck.com for a slew of other services.

Also according to the german slsk board listed above, it appears as though soulseek will be back up in a few days. I've heard from many sources that the RIAA stuff is just rumour, although I don't think that's true, I'm thinking soulseek will be back again. We'll see... Just another nail in RIAA's coffin. Digital music truely is the future both for the consumer and the artists. Thoes that try to block this will be discarded on the trash heap of history as the backwards greedy fools they are.

Its not the RIAA. They probably wont go for soulseek until they have finished off either kazaa or aimster. I expect soulseek is next on their list through. Time to start the jurisdiction game.

Oh, one more thing:

DONT PANIC

I dont want to see thousands of users running from soulseek to other p2p programs, at least not until the RIAA really attacks it.
