RCA Scenium DRS7000N DVR Impressions
Posted by AdminMrXero in on January 8, 2003 at 5:37 AM

Meet the RCA Scenium DRS7000N, this is by far one of the best ideas of 2002. The RCA Scenium plays mp3s quite well, although it is more of a secondary feature. What this machine is, is an all-in-one home entertainment system, built in one sweet looking compact unit.

By that I mean: you can listen to your CDs and mp3s on it, you can store your jpegs and mp3s in it's built-in 40GB hard drive, you can watch your favorite DVD movies on it(in progressive scan for you HDTV owners) and the best feature of all, you can record/pause/rewind live TV! Just like TiVo or ReplayTV can, BUT without paying a monthly fee or giving up your personal TV viewing info.

Tivo and ReplayTV are known as Personal Digital Recorders or PVR, also sometimes called DVR, the "D" is for digital. If you want to read up on PVRs check out this simple Q&A on PVRs.

So far on my testing all mp3s have played back flawlessly. The unit DOES display ID3 tags when playing off of a CD, but only on your Television screen, although they seem to disappear after you've downloaded your music onto the unit's hard drive.

Video recording has been a blast and I have pretty much gotten rid of my VCR. Life is so much easier when you can blow past commercials at 60X speeds. The FREE Guide Plus++ Gold allows you to program shows to record up to 3 days in advance! The Scenium can record up to 31 hours at lowest quality video setting which is very good looking most of the time and records close to 9 hours at highest. At highest the picture quality is so bright and clear you'd swear you were watching HDTV.

This is a sweet unit that is only currently sold exclusively at Circuit City stores around the US and Canada for $599.99. But you can find a few units on Ebay as well.

I'll have a full review up soon!

It does look pretty damn cool. The front is mirrored and very slick.

I've been saying since Tivo and Replay came out this is what I wanted, a digital "VCR". I have a DirecTivo and hate paying the monthly fee, to use a piece of hardware that I paid a fortune for. Still a little pricy however, but as the units gain popularity the price is sure to come down.
