A vintage Beatle instrument moment. - 1958 Hofner Violin bass
>click here for ebay listing 931863051
Much rarer than Paul McCartny's 1962-4 "unbound" model 500/1, this is the second year prototype of the 500/1, which was first introduced in 1957. It is a gorgeous instrument, that looks and sounds like a violin as much as a bass, except with fantastic Hofner bass tone. Everything works. Nice condition, with 50 years of scuff marks on the top and a few belt buckle "worms" , but quite pretty with an antique quality. Sounds GREAT amplified, especially with the 1964 VOX AC-50 head and 18" Vox Foundation cabinet included. THIS RIG IS EXTEREMELY RARE AND AUTHENTIC. The Vox AC-50 tube head is known for its clean warm tone, and is a recording studio must have. Beatles used AC-50's, 30's and 100 heads. The AC-50 features 50 watts of 6l6 tube power. Recreation authentic bass case included. The Foundation cabinet has the correct and rare 18" Goodman woofer. More pictures at http://vintagegear.dmusic.com/pictures .
A beat up one of these bass without a pickguard went for over $5,000. Clean AC-50's go for $1000.00 to 2000.00 . The foundation cabinet is virtually priceless because of its rarity, This one is clean and original.
$10,000 for the rig. Trades accepted (cars, airplanes, computers, art, Furniture)

sounds nice, one of theses day you'll have to stop by The Guitar and Amp Center. If you do tell Warren I say hello. You can see his store on my site. There is not a guitar his does not have. From pre-WW2 Martins to a room fill of mandolines. He's in Nothern Va., Harrisonburg.
Still Pickin'

"Beat it"? I wasn't aware I had to beat anything. Hofner instruments are very collectable. Sounds & looks like a nice package. I wish Leflaw the best of luck in selling it.

No, I'd rather have a L/H McCartney style Hofner. Probably like his second one (the '63 model).

Indeed. Actually this version looks much more like the Gibson violin bass, the EB-01 (which came with a long endpin so you could play it like an upright - Victor Wooten has one featured on the cover of one of his solo albums), than the later Beatle model. But I don't know which one came first, that or the Hofner. With the Fender Telecaster bass (which later became the Precision), coming out in the early to mid 50's, there's not a huge span of time here.

I had an EB-01 many moons ago - with a blue aluminum pole that attached to it.
It was heavy as hell. This one is extremely light - like a violin.
PS: I used to play around boston with Bela Fleck in the 70's.

Sounds like a typical Gibson - probably wasn't even a hollowbody. Bela's one of those guys who people who know, know. But sadly he's not as well-known as he should be.
