''I Don't Want My MTV''
Posted by AdminMike Darrah in on September 16, 2002 at 3:48 PM

A recent decision to not play the latest video from Public Enemy on MTV sparks an online petition against the music-media monster.

From the online petition:

"MTV has chosen to prohibit Chuck D and Public Enemy from showing a Video because a political activist such as Mumia is shown briefly. I say to MTV, how HYPOCRITICAL! MTV continues to show videos that reek of lewd sexual nature and discussion of violence, drugs, violence against women, in particular Black Women. MTV played, "Because I got high" over and over again. I guess that song stayed in rotation because of the marketing techniques of MTV."

This is more than just trying to get a video played. This is about the priorities that MTV is teaching a whole generation to subscribe to. Priorities in which money sex and drugs come before independent thought and intelligence.

Here is the link for the petition:

Sadly, I couldn't sign it. While I wholeheartedly agree with its cause, and I think advertising sensitivities have crossed over into the art world, I couldn't sign it, since the only eligible signatories are "The Hip-Hop and The Black Community." And I am a member of neither. ..as far as I know. :' (Skeptical)

I don't watch MTV any more. They don't play the music they used to. It's very commercial now, all the bands and artist that are shown are made by and for MTV.

MTV caters to the 12 year olds now. Not worth watching.

I watched it all the time when they played a lot of half-decent stuff on party and chillout zones but I have to agree it's become as transparent as a record label.

What's fuckin' wrong with MTV is that it has too many "original programs". They should've stayed strictly a music video channel.....

Forget regular MTV; MTV2 is where it is at.
MTV2 plays nothing but videos, as do MuchMusic
and VH1 Classic.

Ehhh, so they chose to not show a video showing Mumia but instead they show a bunch of rap videos that's pretty much shitty with repitive subject manner and have the same layout of booty shaking video gurls with message of "I need a gurl" and "look at my beamer with a roley that shines away haters"?? This just tells me that mtv is interested in commercial rap, just not any rap that attempts to put out some form of a serious message. Probably don't have enough big booty jawns for those idiots :P (Razz)

its true MTV sucks, but i thought it always sucked. never playin the things you want.

hey, if this goes through do you reckon there'll be another channel made 4 watchin music? it was very profitable in the beggining. im sure some rich bastard will see that this could be quite an opportunity.
