RIAA Website Hacked A Third Time!
Posted by AdvancedBill Evans in on September 2, 2002 at 6:15 AM

Yep, Its being reported by MP3Newswire, that the RIAA website was hacked a third time over the Labor Day Weekend.

Once again the same pages as before were put up, but this time included 20 Linkin Park tunes hosted on the RIAA servers for download.

I certainly don't condone the hacking of the RIAA website, but I have to admit its ironic in sad sort of way. This is the same type of tactic that the RIAA and MPAA want to use to disable users. Imagine, they hack yur computer, plant "evidence" in a shared folder on a file sharing program, then document the files, and report you to the FBI. They aren't above it, regardless of what they say.

Now then on to other matter's concerning the hack of the website. A quick check reveals that they are running Microsoft IIs Server Version 4.0. There are lots of sources for repairs and security upgrades to make their server secure form these types of attack.

I think they may have been Milla, I know they had tunes up there, none I recognized so it coulda very well be Linkin Park.

3rd times the charm. Maybe now after being the victim, they'll realise how it feels to have this danger hanging over your head. yeah right. oh well, in a perfect world maybe. I just wish it WOULD work that way so they'd find some other crusade to front and leave us music lovers alone.

Man, Why use p2p when the RIAA site gives you music direct from their server?

Go Hackers!

Hail Mp3!!!

the mp3's were always there, the site was not hacked a third time. When they took the site down the first time, they only fixed the main index totally not noticing the hacked page was still there, along with the mp3 directory. im sure i emailed you guys this stating just that. You can go around looking at the first hacked page and u will see the link at the top of the page that goes to the news page that was hacked with all the MP3s. like i said, they didnt remove that page, and carelessly brought the site back up. I dont know where some people get thier news from here. quite embarassing really, since their never was a third time. all the stories on this can be found in the news sections at http://www.broadbandreports.com/

the thing is, this was the RIAA's stupidity in not removing the meterial the first time, thus thier webmaster being a dumbass and probably will be without a job.

and secondly, the RIAA might try to use the excuse of a third hack just to cover up thier own stupidity and rid thier liability for being so stupid in the first place, dont buy it people!
By the way, i was one to get the whole linkin park album courtesy of the RIAA. :) (Smile)

Either way, hacked again, or not, it makes the RIAA look pretty stupid. And these ar eth epeople that are determining what you can do on the internet, want protection for inadvertant damage if they hack you,
I myself keep checking to see when they got it back up. Once it was back up and running, the links to files didn't work anymore, for about 24 hours. Then on Sayturday they became available again. (there is a mirror of the hack at http://www.boycott-riaa.com/hacked/riaa.org.htm this is a working copy, not a screenshot.

usually I dont post to news articles but has it ever occured to anyone here that the RIAA could be hacking their own site for the publicity? seems to me that 3 times in a row for even a hacker would be a bit much. They tend to get bored after they've hacked a site and move on....

just a thought.

They probably don't have the knowledge to do it even once. They laid off their "Internet Evangelist" Karen Allen (no not the actress) in Jan. while she was attending the Future of Music Conference. She's the one who put the website together for them.

Just wondering if they really could be that dumb? the only other thing is that hacker could've left a backdoor open and can get in at anytime. websites like that seem to be all automated. not really run by humans. still think its odd for a hacker to keep going back to that same site. The thrill of the hack would wear off quick.

I dont do P2P so I dont usually pay attention to the RIAA idiots anyway heh.

You don't mess with a person where they breathe :) (Smile)

We are technologically addicted, and politicially pugnacious and they are deliberately instigated conflict with us. I could have told you, you just shouldn't poke a grizzly bear with a short stick.

And I'm still not condoning it all, just commenting on the inevitability of it all. If they actually start hacking or suing users, this will increase dramatically.

The RIAA uses Microsoft stuff to run their site?
No wonder it's so easily hacked!

I said this would happen months ago. I said they were using IIS, that its almost impossible to keep patched. I scanned them and the subnet their servers in and found their firewall isn't properly configured.

I dont mind people hacking them, theres nothing of interest on there anyway!! the only reason people visit is to see if its been hacked !!!
