Vancouver, British Columbia CANADA:
It was more than the petite pop-rock singer-songwriter could have hoped for. When independent recording artist, Kelly Brock, stepped onto the stage on Thursday, August 8 to perform tracks from her third CD entitled “Dirty Dishes,” almost 300 people had gathered to critically listen to the long-haired slim singer-songwriter.
“There were no more tables, so people just stood on the floor listening,” she recalls. And listen they did. When MC Chris Calhoun from Z95.3 returned to the stage after Brock’s final song and first single, “High on the Sunshine,” thunderous applause and cheers bounced back when he asked if they wanted to hear another song. Brock’s encore surprised the crowd when she picked up a guitar and began an acoustic solo of “Grateful,” summing up her feelings towards the album, the party and life in general for the quiet, engaging musician from Kitsilano. “This is my acoustic debut,” she told the audience. Brock finished her 45-minute showcase with a legion of new fans.
One of the highlights of the evening occurred when the artist thanked the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for all the support and information provided to her mother, Sherry Brock, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and is now on the road to recovery. When Mrs. Brock was invited to the stage, her daughter presented her with flowers and a speech that drew emotional response from many of the audience, who listened raptly to Brock’s words. “My mom has been a great inspiration for me all these years,” she stated. “Pulling through such a deadly disease was one of her greatest accomplishments. And now her hair is even starting to grow back and it is so soft!” When Brock ruffled her mother’s scarf tied around her head, some audience members wiped their eyes. The crowd gave a roar of approval to both Sherry Brock and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation through a lengthy minute of clapping.
Industry personnel were in attendance, as well. The president of Synergy Records, Darren Staten, was impressed with Brock from the start. “It’s like going from an old Mississippi honky-tonk feel to a laid-back Southern-California beach vibe,” Staten commented. “Brock took us on a fantastic musical journey.”
