Wha-cha cha cha... Hey y'all this is DMusical Notes.

Went to see the legend Glen Danzig play last night, if you don't know him by name you may know him as the lead singer of the Misfits and if you don't know the Misfits you may have heard Metallica's "Last Caress/GreenHill" which is a cover of the Misfits song. Anyway great show... I left bleeding which is always a good sign of a fantastic concert.

My computer is being a little poopy for the last week or so and I'm sick and tired of it. So tonight I plan on just formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch with my systems disk... I'll keep my fingers crossed too... so if you don't see a DMN tomorrow night you'll know why but I should have everything up and running hopefully by tomorrow night.

With all that out of the way let us get to some bites.

iPod for the PC!
Credit CNet

Jobs used his keynote speech at the Macworld trade show here to make a flurry of other announcements as well, such as details about new syncing software, the next update to OS X and the end of free iTools.

The most dramatic announcement focused on iPod. The new players include ones built specifically for computers that use Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Apple lowered the price of the existing 5GB iPod to $299 from $399 and a redesigned 10GB model to $399 from $499. The 10GB model will come with a new case and remote control and is 10 percent thinner than its predecessor.

Jobs also introduced a 20GB iPod for $499. The new iPods for Macs will be available in stores in early August, Jobs said.

"But there's one more little thing," Jobs said, in his classic way of unveiling something big. "So today we are introducing iPod for Windows."

This means there are three iPod models for Mac users and three models for Windows users with MusicMatch software.

Apple has partnered with MusicMatch for the syncing software for the iPod for Windows models, which will be in stores in late August.

"We want to take care of the Mac customers first," Jobs said.

The new iPods also come with updated software, which supports a new iTunes 3 Smart Playlist feature and offers more browsing features, such as organization by composer. In another enhancement, Apple added calendaring to the iPod and a clock to support the calendar.

Apple's adding calendaring for iPod follows an earlier move with contacts. At the time, Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior director of hardware product marketing, said the company had no plans to add a calendaring feature, which brings iPod one step closer to full-fledge PDA status...

The 5GB model was reduced from $399 to $299, the 10GB model was cut from $499 to $399, and a new 20GB will cost $499. All will be available in early August. The 10GB and 20GB models will include a new Apple carrying case and wired remote. iPod now syncs with Musicmatch Jukebox, making it compatible with Windows-based PCs. The PC-compatible version will be available in late August.
Good to hear... but iPod is STILL really damn expensive... at $299 for a 5 gigger is a quarter of the memory of what you get if you buy a RioRiot. Granted the iPod is smaller and it's got some nice features but it just seems a little TOO high end still. I've played with an iPod for 5 minutes once... aside from a really sweet Navigational system and a nice screen it's nothing too special. It's something I'd be more worried about breaking to actually use most of the time. But the apps for the iPod ARE pretty damn sweet though.

BuckCherry is done
Credit Yahoo News

Los Angeles quintet Buckcherry have called it quits after lead singer Josh Todd unexpectedly left the band to pursue a separate musical career.

The band, which formed in 1998, had its first success when its self-titled debut album, driven by the hit single "Lit Up," went gold in 1999. Buckcherry released Time Bomb in 2001, which yielded radio hits, including "Whiskey in the Morning" and "Ridin'."

Following a spring tour, the group had been writing songs over the past few months, but according to a statement, Todd had grown disappointed with the results.

This past April, Todd and Buckcherry band mate Keith Nelson teamed up with Guns n' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum -- billed as "Cherry Roses" -- at a tribute concert for the late drummer Randy Castillo (Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue).

In addition to musical pursuits, Todd had taken on some acting work over the past year, landing small parts in The New Guy and The Saltan Sea.

Future plans of the other Buckcherry band members and Cherry Roses have yet to be announced.
They were a pretty good group... IMO they didn't get anywhere near super popular though but they had a small following with the alternative/punk kids. Eh... I won't miss'em.

Aaliya's Pilot showed signs of Cocaine and Alcohol
Credit Mtv News

The pilot in the plane crash that killed Aaliyah in August had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his body, the Bahamas Department of Civil Aviation announced Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

An autopsy of Luis Morales III, who died in the accident with the singer and seven members of her entourage, showed cocaine in his urine and alcohol in his stomach. The department is still investigating how the substances might have affected the 30-year-old pilot.

Twelve days before the August 25 crash, Morales pleaded no contest to cocaine possession in Pompano Beach, Florida, and was sentenced to three years of probation. His pilot's license should have been revoked, although it had yet to be at the time of the crash.

In the report released Tuesday, aviation officials also noted the Cessna 402B aircraft Morales was flying may not have undergone fuel-pump wiring modifications required three years prior to the accident. Particles and corrosion in the fuel filters also suggested routine maintenance had not been performed.

The department is still working to track down the owner of the plane and inspect the aircraft log, which should provide maintenance records.

An investigation shortly after the accident revealed the plane was at least 700 pounds overweight, a finding that also shows up in the latest report. Along with equipment used during the video shoot for "Rock the Boat" earlier on the day of the crash, the plane was loaded with one more passenger than it was certified to carry.

Although the exact cause of the crash is still uncertain, Tuesday's report does rule out a few possibilities. The authorities said the plane's engine, airframe, propeller and fuel tank showed no malfunction.
Hmm... who the hell hired this guy? Extreme carelessness from officials and possibly the record companies... I hope her parents sue the person responsible for hiring this Pilot who shouldn't have even had a license when he killed everyone on that plane.

Long and Boring article about Web Radio Copying
Credit CNet News

WASHINGTON--The Recording Industry Association of America said Wednesday that it has begun pressing for anti-copying technology in future digital radio standards.
Mitch Glazier, the association's top lobbyist, said the RIAA is contacting IT and consumer electronics groups to ask them to consider a "broadcast flag" for digital music sent through the Internet, satellite or cable.

The RIAA's move seems likely to escalate a bitter war of words between the entertainment industry, some hardware makers and open-source aficionados. On Monday, CEOs of some of the largest tech companies including Intel, IBM and Microsoft in a letter to their counterparts in Hollywood stressed a "market-based approach to standards-setting" instead of new government regulations.

Glazier mentioned the new initiative during a roundtable discussion hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Wednesday afternoon and elaborated on it during an interview afterward. "The device would say this is broadcast material not meant for redistribution," he said.

The idea is straightforward: Future hardware and software would treat music differently if it were designated as broadcast-only, preventing users from saving it or uploading it. Currently programs like StreamRipper or StreamCatcher can record streaming music distributed through Webcasting.

But because people might not use these new kinds of music receivers if given a choice, new federal laws likely would be necessary to compel software and hardware manufacturers to abide by the broadcast-only designation. Senate Commerce Chairman Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., introduced a related bill earlier this year that would restrict technology that does not adhere to government-approved "standard security technologies."
The rest of the Article.

I started reading the article but it's a bit too dry for my tastes so I didn't finish it but it does look like an issue to address... Buy why anyone would want to copy crappy quality web radio is beyond me. The cable TV digital Radio is an interesting thing too but only about 2 out of every 10 songs interest me when I turn it on. So I prefer to leave it off.

Mtv tries to convince us that Ozzy is still EVIL! But in the friendly dad kind of way.
Credit Mtv News

When Ozzy Osbourne was chiefly known in middle America for decapitating winged creatures and urinating on the Alamo, he and his annual hard rock hoedown were greeted with protests, boycotts and prayer meetings.

But, oh, what a difference a year makes.

The former most-feared man in rock has now become its most beloved father figure, courtesy of the rib-tickling warts-and-all series "The Osbournes." So as he returns to the road for the first time since becoming the toast of prime time, Ozzy and Ozzfest 2002 are being greeted not with protests but with open arms, and at least a few lingering questions: Can you still be the "prince of f---ing darkness" when that very title has become your copyrighted catchphrase? Can you stand as a larger-than-life rock icon when the world has seen you hunching over scooping poop? In short, can you be America's favorite dad without losing your fangs?

If these roles do in fact exist in conflict, no one bothered to tell the 19,000 fans who turned out on Tuesday when Ozzfest 2002 rolled into the Tweeter Center (Click for photos from the show).

"Come on you motherf---ers," Osbourne pleaded while ripping through the Black Sabbath anthem "War Pigs," producing a field of hands and a wall of appreciative screams.

It's safe to say that Ozzy's fans were well aware of his family-man ways long before a camera crew moved into his home. Those well-versed in Oz lore know the role his loving wife Sharon plays in his career, and his children often sidle up next to him during interviews.

Still, Ozzy and the Ozzfest class of 2002 seemed hell-bent on shaking any residual warm fuzzies lingering as the tour wrapped up its first week on the road.
More to go, it's really long.

Hmm Ozzy's a new kind of evil now... he's now a beloved pop Icon like Britney Spears and Bob Saget... heh I just likened Ozzy Osbourne to Britney Spears and Bob Saget... that'll surely piss Dee off.

Universal appoints mp3 Nazi
Credit CNet News

Universal Music Group has created a new full-time position to help it combat piracy.
Lawyer and former music-television producer David Benjamin will fill the role as UMG's new senior vice president of anti-piracy.

UMG said Benjamin would work with industry trade groups as well as the company's artists, songwriters, and publishing divisions to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of the labels' music.

"Complementing UMG's ongoing efforts to find new ways to make music available to consumers, we intend to use a combination of consumer education, technology and litigation to aggressively combat piracy," Benjamin said in a statement.

Before joining UMG, Benjamin was the co-founder of ClickRadio, an interactive digital radio service. He has also represented artists, including LL Cool J and Mary J. Blige, and has produced music programming for NBC.

In recent years, music companies have been broadsided by the popularity of peer-to-peer services that have allowed millions of consumers to swap copyrighted works for free. Fearing they would lose control over their music, the labels have turned to the courts, suing peer-to-peer services such as Napster and Scour to the brink of extinction.

Benjamin's appointment comes as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which represents the major labels, is further beefing up efforts to hobble unauthorized file-swapping. So far, plans have included cracking down on companies that allow employees to swap files, threatening lawsuits against individual music swappers, and using technical measures to flood swapping sites with bogus files.
The fun never ends... rather than making threats I'll just make an offer I'll give any hacker a nice crispy 5 dollar bill if they are able to hack into Universals employee network system and just trash it to hell. That's right a nice Crispy 5 dollar bill is sitting on the table waiting for you to do it kids... you know you were going to do it anyway. Why not take the challenge?

Phew that was a long news day... now for a little change of pace.

Dear Mrs. Deceased
Credit Yahoo News

- A British bank said on Tuesday it had apologized to a man after sending a letter to his dead wife that began "Dear Mrs. Deceased."

A spokesman for Egg, a bank which operates on the Internet, said one of its employees had mistakenly entered "Deceased" on a form letter in place of the woman's name.

"What happened was, due to a clerical error -- that's just a manual input error -- the wrong details were entered on a piece of correspondence," said spokesman Mark Maguire.

"We were sending a piece of correspondence to her husband about wrapping up her accounts...There was a mistake on the form, which referred to her as Mrs. Deceased."

"Obviously it's a very unfortunate, isolated error and we've apologized to the customer," he said. "It's something which we obviously regret."

There's one dumb Bush per generation Noelle is the name of GenX dumbass
Credit Yahoo News

Gov. Jeb Bush's 24-year-old daughter Noelle was jailed Wednesday for having prescription pills while in a treatment center, violating a court-ordered drug treatment plan.

A judge sentenced Bush to three days behind bars in Orlando for contempt of court.

Bush had the pills in her possession for about a half-hour, but tested negative for having taken them, said her lawyer, Pete Antonacci. He said he didn't know what the pills were.

A letter from the treatment center to Judge Reginald Whitehead said Bush was questioned by a staffer who noticed her carrying pills. Bush said she had found the pills, while a nurse said they were taken from a cabinet in her office, the letter said.

"There is a concern about her lack of honesty, and how it relates to her (recovery)," the letter said.

Bush was arrested in January at a pharmacy drive-through window for allegedly trying to buy the anti-anxiety drug Xanax with a fraudulent prescription. She was admitted to a drug treatment center in February, with the possibility the charges would be dropped if she completed the program.

Bush was being held in protective custody, as is common with high-profile inmates, authorities said. A hearing on her case was set for Friday, the day of her release.

The jail normally doesn't allow weekday visitors, but Gov. Bush was allowed to visit his daughter Wednesday night after speaking in Orlando.

"We're saddened and disappointed that my daughter's not complying with the court order," Bush said at the presentation. "People that have addictions don't recover in a perfect way. My daughter's not perfect.

Earlier Wednesday, he said in an e-mail to reporters: "We love Noelle, but she is an adult, and I respect the role of the courts in carrying out our state's drug treatment policies."

Yup stupid people are everywhere... Beware...

That's it from me time to kill my computer. Goodnight.

Now I have visions of Bob Saget in black leather on stage killing bats and doing a rendition of "diary of a madman" . In fact, I would LOVE to see this happen!

Good to hear that Universal has a new Anti-Piracy division and a new chief for it. We know where to mail the hate letters and suspicious powders now ;) (Wink)

Cindy Cohn from the EFF said this in the rest of the WEb Radio Copying article: "If you get content and it's marked broadcast-only, your device won't let you cut and paste or do anything the copyright holder doesn't want you to do."

The only way they can truly stop a broadcast is by not broadcasting it as we have to be able to listen to it. Audio Out, Tape Player In, etc....

And everybody will dump their £1000 Aiwa systems and go buy a new 'Mitch Glazier Approved' £50000 Fony Player which has most of it's functions crippled or on 'pay-per-play' and requires a constant connection to the RIAA web site to check all your files for piracy and costs you £100 a month to run... heh heh heh heh :D (Big Grin)
