Why It's Important to be an artist who promotes.
Posted by AlternativeFabian in on May 31, 2002 at 12:16 AM

Since my creation into a self proclaimed male solo electronica pop artist, I have learned that hours in my home studio, consisting of a few mic's, computer and Midi keyboard, are tough and exhaustive.
I can go for about 8 hours nonstop in creation mode, ignoring those who love me. Sometimes I think, is all of this worth the time and effort. Am I just creating music to take my mind off the drama that seems to follow all of our lives.
I have realized that Im a unique person, and I should be myself and allow myself to be free.
I have always been a loner and a social person, I think balancing those traits will lead me into a more well rounded person.
But how do I get to grow unless other people are listening to my music, sharing their thoughts about their lives and my music.

In order to be heard I have to also be a tough promotional manager. I think the only promotinal manager I have ever seen work is the chick from the show AB-FAB.
So the journey of rock and roll and self promotion and decadance begins.

Searching for a new website like a crazy person, that I can upload my music for new people to download and enjoy.
I watch tv and I get around, I know what makes a succesful artist. You have your Alanis and Eminem's, and they are well promoted. And then you have the unsigned Indie Artist who's kicking down every door trying to get noticed.
I have been able to find about 35 to 40 websites that allow you to upload your music so that others may find you all for FREE.
D Music for a great example of a site that is well promoted and talked about and easy to find. Finding your site is the most important thing an artist or a band can do to gain mega exposure. The most impotant thing about this site and others like it, is that it's free. You just have to be patient and smart. Patient for the time it takes to upload music, and smart to enter the right information that will advance your carrer.
Here is what I did, I got a DSL connection and then I used every search engine for, Mp3+upload+artist, then I clicked on every link that I felt would bring me the most exposure. I signed in and uploaded a few songs I have in my arsenal of music. Then after that I SAVED my newly created site for additional updates that I would have to make like change the music or add new songs. I work like a promotional monster, I give the same amount of energy into promotion as I do my preformances, so Im working it belive me. I say "promote promote promote your ass off".
Why? well thats the easy part, the internet is the genie out of the bottle that wont fit back in because everyone who likes free music is getting there wishes. And why not make your music free for all to get in MP3 format since now mp3 players are affordable and the music is free.
I belive the reverse is true about swapping music for free. When you get a single in mp3 format, and when you like it you will buy the album and search more for the artist.
The music you have downloaded is now a little commercial of the artist you have just downloaded. They now have your attention, and that is worth thousands of dollars. And since you are so smart, you now have your songs in a 24 hour non_stop rotational orbit around the planet.
Me being a freak putting my music on www.getoutthere.com
first. After gaining 10 number one hits on the UK Alternative and Pop charts, I said oh boy, Im gonna have lots of fun! And I am, I want everyone to have as much fun as me.
And then I realize that all of this is worth it, it a vindication or sorts. The approval to keep doing what your doing since you can only get better. I have many things to share and isn't that the true meaning of life, sharing your heart with those who can understand it's meassage. So I guess I answer to my own doubts, realizing that I am an independent artist in the creational begging of my carrer, answering to myself.
And most importantly sharing my heart with the world, and that is worth more than money.

Talk about preaching to the choir! Many people don't understand how promotion is just as much part of the game as setting up/breaking down at gigs, writing and recording. Too many people think they can play their guitar into their portastudio, then the world will beat a path to their door. Might as well shove the tapes under the bed! Speaking of promotion (shameless plug here), keep an eye out for 'Jeremiah Ellsworth' (my band) banner ads to appear here on Dmusic in the next few days or so. Promotion!

Very nice article "Fabian",and you will make it and already have;but make sure while you are trying to get whereever you want to get that you do not close the doors on people who are trying to help or just be a friend.
I myself, have been producing, writing and singing in bands since 1988.
I myself have been made offers by major labels, and i turned them down because the timing wasn't right and they were doing a lot of assuming about how they would change me into their contribed image rather than allowing me to freely express myself the way i was. Thats jsut the way the recording industry is. Like they say "We are a business and we are their business. the recording industry is the pimp and were the bitches !!
