In a musical climate that has welcomed the White Stripes and the Black Keys, Michael Williams Band has nothing to fear in terms of gaining a strong fan base, especially after this album was produced by the legendary Eddie Kramer.

"Hey Baby" is a jaunty jam with lethargic vocals and a full blues band sound. With blistering guitar work brightening up the traditional blues structure, Fire Red lets you know from the first number that it's going to be a modern Muddy Waters, full of soul and fiery guitar.

"No More Suffering" features wah pedaling and soloing with the same chill-out vibe as "Hey Baby." With repeated "baby babes" and syncopated strumming offset by brief forays into distortion and heavy drumming, this is the kind of stuff I think of as "Dad rock" --it's in the same vein as Wilco and Eric Clapton and other smooth, savvy rockers both Dads and their kids can listen to without feeling not "with it".

"Entre Tus Ojos" has a beautiful Spanish sound, replete with hushed cymbals, Spanish lyrics and a Santana-esque electric guitar playing off the classical arpeggios. It's a nicely layered track with harmonized vocals and contrapuntal percussion that blends into the blues-iest of numbers on the album, "It's No Surprise," incredibly well. There's intricate improv, soulful crooning, and a nice bebop backbone making for a great listen. "Bet Yo' Mama" starts with an especially incendiary guitar riff, and even the vocals sound distorted in the style of the Black Keys. Catchy melodies seem to be this band's strong suit, as I found myself humming this one to myself hours after the first listen. The crunchy distortion and squealing solos make up for the somewhat lackluster lyrics.

The title track kicks off with a crunchy hammer-on leading into a thick rocker. It's a gritty, stripped-down garage rock take on blues complete with psych-soaked solos and a pounding bass. Like the album itself, "Fire Red" doesn't hit you over the head with its genius, but its solid instrumentation and catchy melodies are spot on. "Don't Put Me Out" starts strong with yet another fast-paced fuzzy riff that sometimes leads and other times underlines the equally quick-footed vocals, while "Lately" returns to "Entre Tus Ojos" tempo and comparatively tamed instrumentation. Definitely the most soulful track on the album, it features lyrics about dark clouds and sorrow, downbeat drums, and minimalist guitar that plods along for six minutes. It's a little underwhelming after listening to its predecessors, and even the interspersed bluesy solos don't do much to break the somnolent, somber feel.

"If You Let Me" wakes you up with the distorted noodling and wailing slides you come to associate with Michael Williams Band. "Dead & Gone" ends the album with a fingerpicked ditty that gains its emotional power from the sheer lack of sound unleashed during the previous songs. Sparse strings underscore the heartfelt vocals and give the listener a pleasant sense of closure by its end. Fire Red is a smooth blend of blues, garage rock, and a little bit of funk, a sound ripe for any or every-day listening.
