I don't know about anyone else but I sure appreciate a daily reprieve from the madness of everyday life at work and at home. Performers like 2002 and their recording Damayanti
make that special place in my mind and soul a reality.
Music like this puts normality and flow into an otherwise frantic world. While observing the musical environment I could not help but notice on the cover of this CD (artwork by Cindy Grundsten) how strikingly real the tiger looks, and even more so than the girl. Whether this holds any significance for the audience or not, I am not sure. I think there is something being said with that visual, everything means something right?
Beyond the visual interpretations is one beautiful album in Damayanti
. The title refers to a name of a princess and the rest of the story you can create for yourself in your mind's eye as you absorb the sounds. That is the beautiful thing about an all instrumental recording, the listening is a prerequisite but the storyline is up to you the listener.
You can call this New Age or just instrumental relaxation music, whatever works but in the end the labels mean nothing and everything you need is right inside the music. You simple cannot put a feeling or healing sounds into a box and stick a label on it, there is much more meaning to be found. The entire album is a slice of heaven but the one track that really gave me goose bumps all over was "Flight of the Swan." It is the only track that really steps away from the musical format for a while and offers some soothing jazz infused guitar with a definitive new age backdrop with flutes and such weaving their way into the musical tapestry. It just struck me with such happiness and warmth, it's hard to explain. I think you have to hear the track and get into the right frame of mind to let the music take you away. Sometimes certain songs bring you somewhere - you know you have been there before and all around are things that are familiar but you cannot seem to nail it down and explain it to someone else, in a sense "Time Stands Still." You don't know whether to leap up in a spurt of joy or just let out a long cry to relieve your inner emotional pain. Come to think of it, I had a lot of those moments listening to this album and it made me feel so good!
is not specifically for those of us who are particularly enlightened or on a spiritual path, while it does include those of us who are, it is more of a revelation for folks that just need a break to go and take a different turn and get on that road for a while to feel what it's like to take that ride. 2002 provides the transportation so take it for a test drive now.
