The Tools Available To You
Posted by AlternativeAngelo Sotira in on December 5, 2001 at 5:28 AM

Take advantage of the tools gnutella.com provides; get involved, stay informed. What YOU think matters more than anything else.

Let me start by saying, this site launched a day ago ... and even before it launched it was already reaching hundreds of thousands, close to millions of people per month due to the popularity of the Gnutella technology.

Over the next month we expect explosive growth that will easily put us in the millions of unique users. With the tools we provide on here we're giving you ALL a platform, or a soap box if you will, to reach all who come to this site. Take advantage of that, you can make a difference, you can have a say, you can make your mark ... and most importantly you can stand up for your rights.

As consumers we have more power than any organization in the free world no matter how rich or big it may be. BUT NOT if we don't act.

Register for an account, you can do so by clicking this link. Then update your Stance. Are you Pro-Gnutella? Anti-Gnutella? Neutral on the issue? Why?

Talk on the forums, ask questions, you will get answers. Comment on news stories.. or hell, write your own news stories! (Click on the link under your account settings to do so.) ... but please, do use the tools.. a lot of people from all sides view this site, I guarantee you will be heard.. pro.. anti.. whatever your stance may be.

If you don't act, if you don't speak up, if you don't get involved ... the decisions being made in these critical times won't take you in to account.

Here's one example that troubles me immensely: did you know that 2600.com lost their appeal of a decision made last August regarding the well-publicized DeCSS linking case just days ago? Basically, the court is saying it is illegal for you to place a hyperlink on your site to a piece of information because the information could be used to commit copyright infringement. Let me repeat that. The court is saying you can’t place a *hyperlink* on your site.

Speak. Up. Here's a platform to do it that reaches millions. Any questions?

For starters, exercising your right to share information person to person is a way of exercising your right to free speech. If there comes a day (and some argue there already has i.e. 2600) when you can't share information with another person be it the Net or otherwise, then I'd say we're all in serious trouble...

For advanced, actively sabotage any institutions that try to enforce restrictions on your ability to share whatever information you like with whomever you like. But beware: THEY are everywhere. (It's not for no reason I didn't mention keywords like 'plane', 'bomb', 'white house' or 'harry potter divx' in this post...)

But what can I do? I'm only one person.
One man CAN make a difference.
Your vote counts.

It's apathy. Once its done you'll wonder why nobody did anything about it, then shrug your shoulders and continue life.

True Spankdaddy. I'm one to stand up for my rights, especially freedom of speech (thus freedom of information). If we don't become warriors about it, we let the opposition win without a fight. I'm not agreeing with distributing music, but I certainly don't agree that other people can dictate what I do.

yuukansan.. well said man. That's the spirit.

It's not about stealing stuff, that's wack. It's about protecting ourselves so that the route the courts take to make sure people can't steal stuff don't affect our rights.

I think Yuukansan said everything I could have said, maybe even more eloquently. We can be like the "freedom" fighters like John Travolta in the movie Swordfish. :) (Smile)

I agree with PhillyMedia and Spyed. Protecting your rights is the most important thing you can do for yourself, and those who will come after you. Gnutella is not about stealing from others, it is about flexing your right to freely transfer information to others.
