I used to get lots of hits with the Gnutella network, but lately I'm getting zilch! Have the lawyers shut down all the host-cache sites? I've downloaded the latest version and latest host-cache files, but I rarely get even ONE single host - even if I wait for an hour or more - NO connections. I'm moving over to Kazaa or another P2P until Gnutella improves. 12/8/01

There is probably not much you can do if the client doesn't automatically find a host at startup unless you know of a specific one you have found somewhere else online. Many of the gnutella nets are down now. For those who think this is a place like audiogalaxy or mp3.com, your in for a little culture shock. This is NOT a place to post or request downloads. This is NOT a download site. All this is (the way I understand it) is a place for people to go who support the gnutella technology. Gnutella is peer to peer, which means you connect directly to another person. No one can just "turn on" the downloads here, because there is no central server with the files on it. If you are having problems connecting to a computer, then more than likely all the other gnutella users are having the same problems and can't help you. I am sure that all of this is posted somewhere on this site, but since it seems to be normal for users here to sign up, log in, and start cussing in forums because there aren't any downloads on the front page; I decided to put it here for those to read. Don't get mad because no one will share files with you here. They can't. Go download a client and try your luck like the rest of us.

This means Bearshare, Limewire and so on, one of these programs MUST be installed on your system. THAT is what you use to look for "free" music. The help forums can give you sites that your program can connect with. The programs listed here also have HELP files, suggest you READ the help files on how to USE these programs. Unfortunately, they do not READ YOUR MIND - you actually have to input some data (search terms anyone?)in order for them to work! If you actually get connected and search for something and it does not find it directly for you, this means NO ONE USING THE NETWORK has what you want. You have to try again later. MAYBE someone logged on has what you want.

That seemed to be the main problem with me getting gnutella running. Just change the default port to 1234 (for some reason i have better luck with this one) and give it a few minutes to weed out the broken hosts.
