I was a bit upset when I heard the news. I recently went to a club here in Philly where she did a colabo. with The Roots. First and only time I've seen her in person. She was supposed to play the leading female role in the sequel to the Matrix and would have been damn good in it based off the great job she did in "Romeo Must Die." Oh well, I guess I'll get some MP3's in her honor today.

wait a minute... anyone ever notice that the only time that famous people die in airplane crashes is when they're flying in a cessna? I just kinda find that a little weird... thought that they would have learned by now. oh well... sad to hear... but good evidence of why nobody should fly in a cessna jet.

i'm really sorry to hear Aaliyah has passed away. i don't care for R&B, but her music was the only i could actually appreciate. it's a shame that this beautiful and talented girl passed away at such a young age. she was only 22 years old. rainy days.....

It always hits harder when it's someone you knew, or someone who was idolized by you or someone you may have known because of their achievments...or just someone who was a good person. She was all of these, and it's so sad to hear that someone's life has to come to a tragic end at only age 22. She was a great singer, although I don't like R&B, and thought that her music was over-played, I still thought she had a wonderful voice, and a great acting career lining the yellow brick road in front of her. I hope she's smiling at us from above right now.

reads the paper: "singer/actress dead! (oh, and 7 others too)"
no disrespect to her talent, but talent, fame, etc are just that. i don't know what else she did with her life, but the fact that she was more gifted in a given area than 7 others doesn't make her more valuable in my eyes. i am saddened by the loss of all 8 deaths, and moderately disturbed that the majority here offer their condolences to her and her family alone.

Man.... I just watched her Bio on MTV a couple of weeks ago and she seemed to be a very nice and down-to-earth person. I've heard a buzz about her death recently... but never believed it. It still seems unbelievable to me, I have this strong nag at my medulla that she is still alive. That the whole thing is a fake. Maybe its just all too unreal. w0w, this is just immense. It truly yanks at my heart strings to hear about young people dieing. Rest In Peace Aaliyah. Every death, especially that of a young person, just makes life seem so much more cruel.

It is said that the plane was heavily overloaded with suitcases and such...
The Pilots complained about this, nontheless the passengers wanted to take off.
I'm not saying that its the passengers fault, but if you overload a plane it doesn't matter if its a small Cessna or a Big Boeing 747.

The way I understand it, the pilot said that there was way too much luggage, and the group insisted on having everything on board.
As for the repeated "Aaliyah was nothing special, my condolences to everyone..."
I used to think like that, I used to think that it was the elevation of one persons death over another, somehow giving more worth to a famous person. Then I learned that proximity is relevant in life and death.
We all rejoice when our sister has a baby, but we dont neccesarily rejoice over some lady in afganistan having a child. Same with death, we cry when our parents die, but not neccesarily when Joe Smith from Delaware does.
This doesnt mean that one persons life is any more important than anothers, it just means that in our eyes, someone means something special, and we celebrate or mourn accordingly. We should grieve over the loss of life, but we shouldnt discourage those who mourn more for Aaliyah, because she made a remote, though distinct effect on that persons life.

I think it's sick and disgusting that everyone memorializes dead music/movie stars, but don't really even stop to contemplate the death of an ordinary citizen
so she sang music for a living and was on tv, so what? so she had talents in areas that brought her to public attention

If we mourned every person's death on this planet it would take our whole life to do so, so basically it's impossible. We mourn those who brought us joy, or that we enjoyed while they exsisted. I don't expect the whole world to mourn MY death when I die, just those who knew me. It's called human nature, deal with it.

Heard the news about 2:30am PST last night. It's always horrible when people die, not just celebrities. Aaliyah was a great artist in her own respects, and she will be missed.
I believe they have finished the first sequel, and were in the middle of shooting the second sequel. The Matrix 2 (Reloaded) was scheduled for release in December of 2002, but got pushed back to May of 2003. The Matrix 3 (Revolutions) which was going to release in the summer of 2003 will be pushed back to an unknown date. You can find more info from commingsoon.net http://www.comingsoon.net/matrix/ .
My thoughts are with the families of Aaliyah and the other 8 people (the pilot was killed as well). Full report: http://www.msnbc.com/news/619571.asp

like most I never really enjoyed her music...but it's a shock to hear this..jeez ...thought I'd share this:
"Take death for example,
a great deal of our effort goes into avoiding it. We make extrodinary efforts to delay it and offen consider it's intrusion a tragic event. Yet, we find it hard to live without it. Death gives meaning to our lives, it gives importance and value to time...time would become meaningless if there we're too much of it..If death we're indefiantly put off the human psyicie would end up, well like a person in a twilight zone episode"
Ray Kurzwell - (sampled from Our Lady Peace's album Spiritual Machines - "R.K. on Death")
so instead look as if the glass is half full...If everyone lived forever our world would become over populated and everyone would be really ugly (being 500 years of course) "Once you realise that death is real and one day you are going to die; that is when you truly will be powerful" - Tyler Durdan "fight club"

Human compassion and heart-felt sympathy aside, i don't understand the widespread responses to the death of celebrities. These are just people, same as you or i, and have as much right to be revered and grieved for as the guy who bags your groceries at the corner market. This is something that bothers me about modern media culture, and more specifically about youth culture in general, who grow to idolize "characters" and "drama/action sequences" as individuals to emulate in social reality. Yes, it is sad that she died, and the seven others. No, it isn't my business at all to feel a social responsibility to singling out and immortalizing a person whom i've never met. How happy her family must be that so many cared for her and are "with them" in their time of need, but how selfishly inappropriate for us to assume some loss through the death of this person whose life we have never touched ourselves. Sadness is for the family; death is a personal thing and a part of life that should be respected as the domain of those who knew the departed. We don't feel compelled to make announcements of the deaths of our brothers, the deaths of our friends. Why not? Are they not as important? No, not in the least, it just isn't appropriate. Having lost people close to me, i can't help but think of the frustration those families feel, even bordering on outrage, because millions of people feel its their right to grieve their daughter/sister/niece/friend. I'm sure she was a good person, a successful individual, maybe inspiration, but she was just a person, one i've never met and never will know. This comment may be in many ways inapproapriate, but i feel its my responsibility to shine a little light on these things in our media-saturated society that are morally and ethically ambiguous or out of place.

Why is everyone making such a big deal?
Thousands of people die every day, and she gets recognition because you saw her on your TV. It's disgusting that on the news reports, the other deaths are not even mentioned. We're only worried about things that are shiny and pretty.
Second, this news hardly has anything to do with deviantart. It's a plane crash. Arguments along the lines of 'music is art' are pointless. Devart has no music on it.
Personally i don't care that anyone i don't know dies. I'm sorry for the people that do care, though.

To Protean and you other 'light shedders' - Because you don't understand something does NOT make it disgusting or repulsive.
I recently lost my mum after a long illness. There were people at her funeral who had never met her, but because they had been touched in some way by her, paid their respects - she was an incredible woman who touched many lives. Do these people have no right to grieve because they didn't meet her?
I grieved for Mother Teresa. I grieved for Freddie Mercury. These people shared a little of who they were with me - and the world - and I feel my world is a poorer place for the lack of them in it.
Have the respect to allow people to grieve even if you are too insensitive to understand it.
My sympathies go out to all families who have lost loved ones recently. Dona nobis pacem.

I hate that she had to die or for that anyone else who dies tragically. I loved her music and couldn't wait until her new album came out but it was only on an entertainment standpoint. I didn't know her personally, never had dinner with her, never conversed with her, never shook her hand. Yes I feel compassion for the family but was also amazed at how the media said basically Aaliyah died, and oh yeah eight others too.The media puts so much light on stars and wealthy people that they forget that they are human too just like me, I bleed, they bleed. I know of several small children in my own city(Dallas) that were killed by gunfire and they get a 10 word article in the paper and nobody cares the next day. If we could start treating everyone the same and make it a big deal when everyone dies tragically people will appreciate life more not only when a musician or an actor dies. Lets keep everyones family that died on that plan in our prayers. Peace

To the fool who made this god awful comment. One does not have to be tangible in your life for you to feel the sadness the death of anyone would bring. Is God not present in your life although you can't see him. I think you should of thought more of what you wanted to say before you beseiged us with such negative chatter. Let the world mourn however they want.

Death don't have a number. You can die at 2 years old or 55 years old, it doesn't matter that she was 22. I been thinking about this since I heard. When God or whoever you believe in is ready for you, then its your time to go. You can't cheat death, I guess God felt that she and her friends had done their purpose on this Earth, and it was time for them to go. Death is very sad, and hard to understand. To know someone or a love one will never grace this planet or existence again is hard to grasp.

It is such a loss to both the music and movie industries. She was slted to appear in one or both of the new Matrix movies. I was stunned mainly by the fact that she was only 22 years old. I hope the record company shows some respect and doesn't release the music video she was working on when the plane went down.
