Hmm.. Bad vibes alert. The great one has fallen at the hands of the evil corporations. Who will be the phoenix rising from the ashes? Audiogalaxy? Gnutella? So many await to conquer the needs of music lovers the world over..

Ugh, Crapster! If you're not pleased with your napster experience, I'd like to point you in the direction of another file-sharing application I've been introduced to called Morpheus, by the geniuses over at MusicCity.com : http://www.musiccity.com/
"A peer-to-peer network powered by Morpheus™, the most advanced P2P application ever developed. The self-organizing, encrypted, no wait way to easily search, share, discover, create and communicate with your friends."
Morpheus is neither central server-based, like Napster, nor based on the Gnutella file-sharing protocol. The program uses a proprietary peer-to-peer protocol to share files among users on the network. I think this program is great so I suggest it to all my friends. Enjoy.

I quit using Napster, when I noticed it was paying too much attention to my hard drive. I really felt a sense of breavement as well, but there are other ways to get Mp3s, and so I'm going that way. The RIAA is a real pain in the ass, and they have a lot of money. I'm just not messing with them. It reall sux that Napster has to go down this way.

I saw a tech demo of Relatable's TRM (the audio fingerprinting software Napster utilizes) at CeBit and it seemed to work with a reliability of only about 70%: It often recognized two different songs as the same, so it looks like the new software will filter a bit more than just the songs copyrighted by RIAA !

I dont care, napster is still useful. But i'm sticking to beta nine, thank you. The second point was put there as a gimmik so not to worry people. I've noticed people adding or removing a couple of seconds of music, so they can escae the filters. Sados.
I really think we shold all complain to the governments to stop the bruta blogeoning of this freeware. I've tried all the others, and they are horrificly BAD ifd U have only got a 56K modem.

between audiogalaxy and morpheus(music city)i have never come up empty when looking for a particular mp3.bootlegs,obscure,whatever.napster's time has passed as far as i'm concerned and i've been beta-testing the new SX(which ain't too great so far i'm sad to say).there's so many others coming and going that i don't think getting music will really be a problem for some time to come.what worries me most is the computer manufacturers developing hardware which won't allow software that plays unlicensed-unencoded mp3's.i hate to think that 5 yrs from now, when a typical processor is 10 terabytes-that i'll still be using my gateway750 to listen to music.

I'm stuck behind a friggin firewall. Napster and other music sharing apps time out too fast for me to be able to connect. Does anyone know any app that doesn't time out/use commonly blocked ports/is port-wise configurable? I know a couple of free ports, but commonly used ones are.. blocked.

my recording teacher was discussing this with the class the other day....we were talking about copyright and music on the internet....well, it *sucks* now, but look at it this way....no matter what the gov't does, we find a way around it...so whatever the RIAA and courts are going to eventually do dealing with MP3's, we will find a way around it....we are smarter than they are...well, no...we are more "clever"...so we will always win....

bleh, mp3 is not the only music compression file type in the world, if in 5 yrs they have found ways to ban mp3s from playin on the harddrive, there'd be about 5 more different compression methods to replace it .. && while i don't know whether we've really got the right to mp3 && free music, i do know that when we pit the greed of the coporations to the greed of the masses, the masses will always find a way ; )

I think Morpheus is great. I highly recommend it. I'd say it gives me about 60 to 70% of the results I remember from Napstered. Good community that refreshingly goes beyond audio. However ... it's still buggy yet (v1.2) and literally DEVOURS system resources. I can't run it 24/7 like I used ta w/the other.

Audiogalaxy currently rules! I get 90 to 95% of the results I used ta get from Napstered (am I gettin' redundant?).
However (seems like there's always one o'those) ... Beware of the spyware!! AG comes w/WebHancer spyware. This worried me at first for fear of AG's malfunctioning once I deleted it, but AG and the Satellite still work just fine fer me without it.
Also, when running AG (which I now do continually), it seems that my system is constantly receiving 4KB of data per minute. I'm relatively suspicious of this, but until I see evidence of wrongdoing, I'll go w/the flow.

John-Draisey: if you stick with that idea, you'll be behind everyone else who are already going over to other services. pretty soon, there will be no songs to download from them. whatever people tell you, napster's filtering is actually working. :/

Morpheus is really KaZaA with a different name and with musicshitty's ads. since its like gnutella in a way where 99.9% of the bandwith is spread to the users, id say its better to get kazaa then to get morpheus.

I'm a Morpheus fan myself...the only bad thing is, that it crashes a little too much on my machine. In my opinion, the current realse should be a beta. But you know, thats just my machine and my opinion. I recommend that people download it though. I've found songs on Morpheus that I could find on napster and other file sharing programs.

stop whining about napster! try winmx (winmx.com), which will search the napster servers as well as others, bearshare.com, audiogalaxy.com or morpheus. trying to work around the napster filters is like trying to find parts for a model T Ford when there are better, faster and cheaper cars all around. i dont believe some of you guys!

MusicCity has already announced intentions to go subscription. They blocked OpenNap and adopted Morpheus to facititate this move. Check out FastTrack's (KaZaA developer) site for more info on their plans to implement a subscription-based service.

If gnutella "cannot be shutdown" because there is no centralized server like it claims, how come there are servers like these:
gnutella.hostscache.com:6346
gnutellahosts.com:6346
router.limewire.com:6346
I don't know much about networking but I'm just curious what this all means. these look like servers to me and they can be shut down can't they?
