New album released!!
Posted by PopJeff in on November 2, 2008 at 5:24 PM

I've just released my first album, and it goes by the name of "Sight Or Sound". It's currently available to buy digitally on CDBaby at:

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jeffedwards

It's also available on Amazon and will be available on Itunes and all other reputable download sites soon.

Ouch... 9.99 for mp3 downloads of your cd? I'll pass.

It's not available on any of the torrent sites, and no release group has touched it. IE: You never released an actual cd-r...

Sorry man, I'm not paying 10 dollars to download lossy shit I could encode better myself.

On the other hand, if you have actual cd's for sale, I'd be more than happy to pay you 10+ whatever directly for an actual cd-r of your music.

Strange that you would only go the digital download route at CDBaby. CDBaby as the title suggests, is mostly about buying CDs with mp3 a secondary service. I only buy CDs from independent artists also. I will download FREE mp3 albums but otherwise, I want the physical CD.

RaidHHI - CDBaby's standard for mp3 downloads is $9.99 now, they changed that from before. If he posted the CD at 13 dollars, it would still be 9.99 for mp3 download.

Never even heard of this guy and he's been here 3 years... Are there any previews of this album or is it a case of buy before hearing (just like the major label way of thinking)?

Which is insane. CDbaby doesn't use scene spec for encoding. IE: they sound like shit, the typical mp3 you can download from a p2p site for example.

I'd rather just pay the artist directly and acquire a physical cd, so I can make my own mp3s from it, that will sound much better than cdbaby's poor excuse for mp3s.

I've had hundreds of requests to put most of these songs on an album. The digital release seemed the quickest and easiest way. I appreciate that digital is not right for everyone, but there is a big market for it in such places as Itunes, Napster etc. There have been sales for this album already. Most of these songs are available to listen to in full in places like Youtube.
I wanted to get this collection out of the way so that I could concentrate on a themed collaborative album which will, in the future be released on CD.
Saying that. If demand is great enough for "Sight Or Sound", then a CD release will probably follow.
For the moment though, it remains a marketing exercise. It's the exposure that counts :) (Smile)

You can check out some of them if you wish on my website at:

mp3 is popular with the younger generation, but less so with adults aged 30 and over and your music is mostly appealing to that range, so your marketing strategy is flawed, IMHO. But good luck to you.

With digital downloads on CDBaby the artists get a greater cut of the profits too.

(CDBaby only takes 9% last time I checked.. correct me if I'm wrong)

His songs are actually catchy.. Good hooks, His delivery format however really stinks.

Hey mr recordman, if you have a postal address, I'd be happy to send a money order to buy one of those cd-'s straight from you...

FrAd,

I don't have any idea how much cdbaby takes from the artist. I do know the mp3 codec and settings they're using leave much to be desired. Seriously, mp3s can sound much better than that.

In answer to 'Leedsquietman'. I would have agreed with your assessment of the listening age. It seems quite reasonable to say that. However, after looking at the demographics of audience figures of roughly 400k. I was surprised to see the following.
65+ = 3 percent.
25-34 = 9 percent.
35-44 = 14 percent.
55-64 = 15 percent.
45-54 = 23 percent.
13-24 = 36 percent.
A marketing strategy is exactly what it is. Not a sales strategy. It might sound weird, but the intention was to do a brand building exercise. Not really centred on sales. However I wont complain if sales do go well :) (Smile)

Yes FraDonaghy. CDBaby do take only 9%. The encoding levels differ across platforms. Amazon for example sell them at 256k mp3. I'm not sure what iTunes does yet.
RaidHHI I really didn't anticipate the interest I have received so far. There hasn't been a CD run (yet). Only a number of Promo's prepared for distribution next month for promotional purposes. If it looks like there is going to be demand, then I will commission them to CD. Thanks for the compliment on the music :) (Smile)
