LA obscenity trial halted over Judge Alex Kozinski's online porn

A high-profile US obscenity trial has been put on hold after it emerged that the top federal judge hearing it had posted sexually explicit material on his personal website including footage of a semi-naked man cavorting with a sexually aroused farm animal.

Other material found on Judge Alex Kozinski's site, which has now been blocked, included a photograph of nude women on all fours painted to look like cows and another of a young man giving himself fellatio.

Mr Kozinski is hearing the trial of Ira Isaacs, a 57-year-old Los Angeles-based film maker, who faces up to 20 years in jail and a huge fine if convicted of selling criminally obscene fetish videos depicting bestiality and defecation.

But his trial at the Los Angeles Federal Court was put on hold just hours after it opened after an LA Times report about obscene material posted online by Judge Alex Kozinski. The judge agreed to the prosecution's request for a 48-hour delay so that the Justice Department could look into possible issues of prejudice in the case.

Mr Kozinski, 57, is a larger-than-life character who is chief judge of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has jurisdiction over nine western states. A judicial conservative who has been mooted as a possible candidate for the Supreme Court, he is also a noted advocate of free speech: he is most famous for having personally switched off the filters blocking access to internet pornography from 9th Circuit computers.

Unfortunately for the judge, there were also said to be more than a dozen copyrighted music tracks listed on the site in MP3 format from artists including Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Weird Al Yankovic.

Mr Kozinski will now come under intense pressure to excuse himself from hearing the trial of Mr Isaacs, whose films include such titles as "Gang Bang Horse Pony Sex Game,,Makos First Time Scat, and Hollywood Scat Amateurs No 7".

"A federal judge who acknowledged maintaining his own publicly accessible website featuring sexually explicit photos and videos today called for an investigation of his own conduct.

Alex Kozinski, 57, chief judge of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, asked a court ethics panel to initiate the proceedings after The Times reported Wednesday that he posted lewd photos and videos on his personal website.

Kozinski was presiding over a closely watched obscenity trial in Los Angeles federal court when he acknowledged the website.

"I will cooperate fully in any investigation," Kozinski said in a statement.

Kozinski suspended until Monday the obscenity trial of a Hollywood adult filmmaker after the prosecutor requested time to explore "a potential conflict of interest concerning the court having a . . . sexually explicit website with similar material to what is on trial here."

Although Kozinski requested an investigation, it's unclear what, if any, discipline he could face. Circuit judges are appointed for life and can only be fired by Congress, though they can be censured by fellow jurists.

In an interview Tuesday with The Times, Kozinski acknowledged posting sexual content on his website. Among the images on the site were a photo of naked women on all fours painted to look like cows and a video of a half-dressed man cavorting with a sexually aroused farm animal. He defended some of the adult content as "funny" but conceded that other postings were inappropriate."

You left out the best part, Code.

Kozinski put this stuff on his website and thought that it was private because he didn't provide a link.

So if you've been sued by the RIAA in the Ninth District, you might want to consider the "How in the world could someone see my files if I didn't make a link to them?" defense.

You're right George...I thought it was hilarious, but remember, according to one of our fine congressmen who was trying to explain how the internet works...
Ted "Bridge to Nowhere" Stephens, in a net neutrality discussion...

""The Internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck. It's a series of tubes," Stevens said during a June 28 committee session.

"And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled. And if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."

At another point in his 11-minute discourse, he said he'd seen these delays firsthand: "I just the other day got - an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially."

I personally think there should be an IQ administered to anyone who wants to get into public office.
