Slick Sonique v1.808 released
Posted by DMemberjark in on October 17, 2000 at 5:52 PM

Just like the slick, but hard, bass drum that this version of Sonique is named after; the latest release shows that the team still offers up the best alternative to WinAMP!

Sonique v1.808, while nothing technically overwhelming, is a rather substantial release. It now includes Vorbis (.ogg) support, out the box, so that folks can use this excellent audio player to listen to the new, and growing, format that is sure to challenge MP3 once it’s development is complete. On top of that, Team Sonique has updated the beloved audioEnlightenment decoding engine to that of v4.6 (though the whatsnew does state v4.5, it IS v4.6).

On top of these two major feature changes, there have also been improvements to the help system. Rather than just displaying help in German, one can view help in German AND English. Another slimy little bug with the looping has been squashed as well. All in all, this is a very solid release that is definitely worth downloading.

My favorite new feature is the ability to press F3 in full screen mode and see the Sonique logo! Woohoo – it doesn’t get any better than this!!!

While you’re downloading Sonique, be sure to check out their sweet contest with Moonshine Music. The idea is for skin developers to make an Overamerica 2000 themed skin. Get them submissions in by the 28th of the month and you could end up winning yourself fame, fortune and even a “cavalcade of cool Overamerica 2000 schwag.” So, like, get hot!!!

The new OGG stuff is very smooth. I hope more players have built-in support for Vorbis soon!

Hopefully this will be just one of many more (frequent) updates from team Sonique in the near future!

Ug.... Sonique....

I personally like all the features and all the pretty colors :], but I think its to much of a ram eater... When I play an mp3 or a music file... I want speed, and an easy to use interface... And i dont nessisarly need to look at the program while playing a song... Right now i have winamp running in the tray... If i need it, i know its there, but it doesnt deserve a presence on my desktop ;P I dont even like winamp all that much (dont hurt me for saying that)... Its to big, and i dont use nearly a quarter of the features....

But thats just my thought... ;p

if its a little too big, then you can alays download the smaller version since you say you dont use much of the options anyway. just to play music right?

Every time I install Sonique in Win2K my sound card get screwed up--on both my machines. That, and it consumes far more CPU than WinAmp and a bit more ram too (though that's not such a big deal).

Anyways, yeah, its pretty, but WinAmp still seems a more solid program (with MASSIVE plug-in support).

sonique is nice looking and full of features, its just to bulky, hopefully it doesn't turn into a ICQ 2000, gawd what a memory hog for useless shit like greeting cards, voice messages, etc.

I want ICQ Lite, one that only takes up 1 meg of physical memory with just chat, instant messaging and file transfers. nothing more nothing else :) (Smile)

Hm, if you've got it sitting in your tray instead of on your desktop, it's using up part of the clock even though it's not in use. I'd rather have an icon on my desktop, thanx. :) (Smile)

just shift sonique into "mini me" mode. way less cpu, and hardly anything to look at

Nicest MP3 player I've used up-to-date. Low CPU and memory usage. Very efficient for it's content. Excellent GUI - kicks Winamp's (WindowAmp) llama asshole. No more square windows. Excellent addon skins, DSPs, visualizations, and great EQ w/ EQ spline tension, for an efficient xxxHz adjustment. All Sonique needs is a full folder adder to the playlist menu w/ recursing, similar to WinAmp(WindowAmp) - then I'll give it a near-perfect score.

I love sonique but my only problem is that with winamp the colors and graphics on the visuals used to be so flawless and with sonique well they arent as nice. still love it,
