The acoustic duo of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement has been getting a lot of press lately outside of their native New Zealand. Flight of the Conchords has expanded from a novelty folk rock group playing to crowds in Australian and New Zealand into an alternative comedy phenomenon. The HBO show Flight of the Conchords seemed to be an accurate extension of the duo’s stage act though it was probably out of place for an audience interested in watching old HBO comedy specials and Curb Your Enthusiasm reruns. Fans of these satirical troubadours will be pleased to know that they are releasing a full length album in early 2008.

If you cannot wait until then to get a piece of Flight of the Conchords, you can purchase The Distant Future through Sub Pop. This EP features six tracks that will provide insight into the duo’s growing popularity. The track “Banter” may sit at the end of The Distant Future but it should be played first in your CD player because it shows the freestyle manner of Jemaine and Bret. The duo discusses their way of discussing their average days during live shows. “Banter” is the show within a show that most groups are unwilling to acknowledge but the Flight of the Conchords embrace.

The studio recording of “Business Time” on The Distant Future and the live version of “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room” show Flight of the Conchords at their finest. “Business Time” shows the steady rambling style of the band as they speak about wooing their lady friends for an evening of paint-by-colors sex. The song “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room” was featured in one of the early episodes of the HBO show and the video readily available on YouTube offers more depth to this song. “The Most Beautiful Girl” is a must-listen for first time Conchords listeners because it shows their simple music, their subtle comedy and their ability to capture the crowd.

They are such the New Zealand version of Tenacious D, it's ridiculous. The question is, who will be the successful actor (i.e. the Jack Black of the pair) and who will be the less successful actor with cameos in the others' movies? (i.e. Kyle Gass)

I think that Jemaine will be the successful actor of the two though I don't think Bret will necessarily be KG. I can see Jemaine being a comedic actor and Bret receding into the night.

Ha, according to imdb.com, Bret was the "Elf Escort" in Lord of the Rings. No wonder they did that parody. . . maybe they let him keep his costume

I am also a bigger D fan than a Conchords fan, WhyTheFuQ though I have cooled to the D since "Sword of Destiny." I like that Bret was the "Elf Escort," that is pretty amusing.
