Anyone who comes to DMusic, doesn't have to be here long before the realization that the Pop Dolls are a highly revered fixture here. An active presence on DM, Ebarbarella has always shown herself as someone innately interested in music of all genres and takes a hand in brilliantly promoting not only Pop Dolls music but also supporting and appreciating the music of other artists here. The combination of her generous talent mixed with Vince's creative ingenuity has resulted in a steady flow of innovative, interesting and edgy music. Ebarbarella was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The daughter of a tango singer (who's music can also be heard on DM at
http://enfectedrecords.dmusic.com/ ) she seemed to be destined to live a musical life. She has lived and traveled all over the world. Vince grew up in Miami, moved to Tennessee where he eventually formed the band Diagnosis Red. His path led him back to Miami where he met Barbie while they were both working at the same place.
Both have had musical childhoods. Barbie was influenced by her father and the Latin strains of the tango. Babrie was first recorded by her father at age two singing ABBA and the Beatles. She got her first keyboard at age five and her first guitar at fourteen. She recorded her first demo at the age of seventeen. Babrie says she has always been musical and "has always dated musicians." At one time, some people from Universal were trying to get her to become a Latin singer. Her response? "No, dude do see how I dress? (laughs) I’m a rocker. And I think I made the right decision. I love making music with Vince. He is a musical genius!"
Vince was also influenced by his father whom he remembers as "the coolest dude in the world" when he would play his original Gibson guitar. Vince says that, at age three or four, when listening to his father play "everything seemed to make sense. Maybe I'm trying to get that back."
It's evident that their backgrounds combined with their individual talents and a dash of fate has led to the creation of one of DMusic's best loved bands. They are hugely popular both here and elsewhere on the internet.
1. How do you write your songs? Which comes first, the lyrics, the music, or is it a combination of ideas?
Vince/Barbie: Honestly, most of our songs derive from nightmares.
2. Are there any of your songs that took longer to create from inception to end production? If so, why?
Barbie: ‘Magazines’ was a pain in the ass. I don’t know what Vince wanted with that song. He didn’t want to ever release it. It’s better if he answers this question. I think I am more impulsive and he is a perfectionist so…
Vince: OK. She pressured me to hurry, but I was taking awhile, I know. I just wanted to write something that could truly measure up to the message.
3. Do you have any personal favorite songs that you have done?
Barbie: My favorites Pop Dolls songs are ‘Haze’ from Nova (first EP 2003), ‘To The Good Times’ (Made in Plastic), and ‘Validation Dance’ (Deleted Reality). But there is one song that we haven’t release yet, called ‘I need a Brain.’ That shit rocks!
Vince: Well I can say this, I’ve always been surprised by the reaction versus what I thought. I like that purity.
4. What instruments do you play and what gear do you use to record and produce your music?
Barbie: I sing. Vince doesn’t want me playing instruments live. We have a super special glove-mic that I am going to be wearing live, but we aren’t talking about it yet. I can play guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum machines; but Vince is the one that produces all the music. Most of the music on the albums was recorded by him because he is better than me (Smiles) just for the record, the heartbreaker guitar is mine and all the guitars on Made in Plastic were done with that guitar. Vince has a new guitar now. (laughs)
5. Who have been your main influences musically? Why?
Barbie: I don’t know. A lot of bands but I think my favorites are Dandy Warhol’s and Depeche Mode. Then I love punk rock! I love Ramones, Pistols, Clash, and 80’s music of course! But I listen to so much music everyday that I cannot make a list of it even if I wanted too.
Vince: For me, it’s hard to say. I’m a total pre-Madonna when it comes to what I want to listen to and yet, a lot of my favorites are considered by most to be not good music (laughs).
6. Has the Pop Dolls sound evolved naturally or has it been a more calculated evolution?
Barbie: I think it evolved naturally, but we did think on making a rocking album for Deleted Reality and Made in Plastic is the more pop one.
7. Inquiring minds seem to want to know, what is the basis of the relationship between Ebarbarella and Vince?
Barbie: (Laughs). People always ask us that question, remember Vince? There is this beautiful girl that we used to hang out with at a club in Florida. Should I say her name? OK. No names, but we told her we were brother and sister and she believe it! So I guess we are whatever you imagine us to be. But we do live together in the same house and yeah, sometimes I want to kill the guy! Like in the Magazines video, when you see us walking down that street at the end, it was hot and the make-up was melting …
Vince: Hmmm.
8. How was your very first live gig compared to what people could now expect when seeing you play live?
Barbie: We haven’t played our first gig yet but we did perform for friends at the studio for 50 fans and close friends after we finished Made in Plastic. Vince and I agree that we are not going to play small unprepared gigs. We did a lot of those with our other bands before Pop Dolls. We are not making the same mistakes again and we haven’t found the right people to be part of Pop Dolls. We thought we did a couple of times, but it didn’t work out the way we wanted it, except for Tori. She is always going to be with us, well hopefully! (Smiles). It’s very hard to find musicians with the same passion and dedication. We live for our music, even though we still have to work other jobs. That’s because we are independent musicians, and we like it that way. We have complete control over the music and the look, we have had offers to get signed, again I’m not going to say names, but they basically wanted to own Pop Dolls. Oops! Sorry I went to another subject there. Coming back to the first gigs, we want it to be perfect. Well in reality, that’s more Vince than me. I just want to play live no matter what and I don’t really care how! It’ll be a really cool show to watch. But then again, I’m more punk rock than he will ever be.
9. Pop Dolls was one of the first bands on DM to use video. How has your creative experiences differed between creating a video for a song and creating the song itself?
Barbie: We love making videos! Now we have 2 videos almost finished but again we are trying to make some better than the first one, that’s why they are not been released yet. The Magazines video was made with a very cheap camera and we didn’t have much to edit it with, but I love it after all. I watch that video and I know we showed what that song means. Basically that it is easy to be on the cover and look pretty but will you remember who was there in the beginning? Because we do, it was really hard for us. It still is….
10. You have been really great at promoting Pop Dolls to the masses. What are your main promotion techniques?
Barbie: That’s my fault I guess, there is no technique about it. When I signed up for DMusic, which was my first experience with a community on the internet. And I just love people. I’m completely in love with the internet and what it is doing to people. Some of my best friends, I don’t know them in person. I don’t know, that’s a very hard question. I think our banners are cool, but that’s kind of it. Our first photos were terrible, I think I got better at designing our image, but that’s just the way we look everyday. And we are honest, that’s a good start for promoting. I am a journalist, I have a degree in mass communication, plus I speak four languages.
11. How did you discover DMusic and what has your experience here been?
Barbie: It was when MP3.com fucked us all over (laughs). I didn’t even like the place much so I Google’ed music sites and there was DMusic. We love DMusic. But Vince isn’t really an internet person and we all know I love it, especially since most of the best friends and artists, I’ve met them here. Thanks DMusic for all the support and love always! And you know who you are, I can’t make a list here of all the people we have come to Love Always, Pop Dolls.
12. Lastly, describe Pop Dolls in 5 words or less!
Barbie: PopDolls is PopDolls: mod, rock, cyber, punk.
Indeed, they are. Have a listen to Pop Dolls here -
