Both parties are officially not worth supporting.

I had to write to the DNC to tell them to get rid of her.

RIAA running public affairs is like handing your car keys to a thief and asking him to be gentle as he drives off with it at high speed... accident waiting to happen!

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE DEMS?

~~she is better known as the Director of Communications for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).~~~

~~Engebretsen's PR approach is centered around stonewalling and avoiding difficult press calls~~

Well really, what could be better than a director of communications that can avoid communicating? Public Affairs? They can't be serious....

Sounds like the same old same old games to me...

Yep.
It was said in another forum somewhere
at another website . . . something to the effect of how

Fairness seems to evaporate
When what's right gets no debate.
Contribution money talks
And balanced views walk.
Politics favors cartels
And freedoms go to hell.

It is.

We are more divided than ever before,
at least in my recollection.
We are more intolerant than ever before
as well.
We have manipulated to accept or entertain
any 'middle ground'.

All or nothing,
with us or against us,
Us or Them,

At least sheep have the excuse of being
animals.

We have been manipulated to never accept any 'middle ground' .

Modern media thrives on black and white issues...gives them something to fan into a roaring news story... trouble is, most folks are middle of the road and hopefully won't be swayed by bad journalism or "idiotoligies".
If you can't discuss the issues rationally, perhaps your impressions have been manipulated.

I do tend to vote for Democrats far more often than for Republicans, but this is more evidence that the mainstream establishment of the Democratic Party is too beholden to the Hollywood lobby groups to ever allow me to register as anything other than an Independent.

Democrat Party claims to be the "party of the people"

...too often, those "people" share the same 90120 zip-code.

There has certainly been heated discussion in Democratic and progressive circles about this. Some argue this person should be unhired, others make a fair case about guilt by association. The discussion really hasn't been about the RIAA itself. I haven't heard anybody defending them. There's pretty near unanimous agreement the RIAA is no good.

So the issue is - do we Democrats want a person who has done public relations for the RIAA doing convention PR for us?

I would urge fellow commenters not to form impressions about the entire Democratic Party based on the hiring of one person.

I might add that there are divisions within the party. And those of us in the movement, who are fighting to "democratize" the party and force the establishment to be responsive to people powered politics, would love to have help rather than scorn. What we're about is summed up well in the book "Crashing the Gate" by Jerome Armstrong and Markos Moulitsas.

The "shill" in question apparently doesn't have a long history with the RIAA. This from the press release announcing her appointment:

"Before joining the RIAA, Engebretsen spent eight years working in
Democratic politics, most recently as a Regional Communications Director
for the Kerry-Edwards for President campaign, where she was responsible
for developing campaign communications strategy for top-targeted states
including Florida and New Hampshire. During the 2004 presidential cycle,
she also served as Deputy Communications Director for the Democratic
National Convention in Boston and as Press Secretary for the Edwards for
President campaign during the primaries. Before that, she worked on
Capitol Hill in the communications offices of Senators Dick Durbin
(D-Ill.) and Chuck Schumer ( D-N.Y.) and in the White House press office
during the Clinton Administration. She is a graduate of Northwestern
University's Medill School of Journalism."

"Both parties are officially not worth supporting."

I've been saying this for YEARS.

"meet the new boss. same as the old boss."

Great quote. And never EVER more truer than today.

"...too often, those "people" share the same 90120 zip-code.'

Not only that but those "people" will only do something "as the party for the people" if there is something in it for THEM (like geting them elected). If they can do something that puts MONEY in their pockets (like supporting the RIAA), then you can be sure they are there with their hands open.

"I would urge fellow commenters not to form impressions about the entire Democratic Party based on the hiring of one person. "

While I agree in principle, just look at the party's record on Copyrights. It isn't any better than the republicans. So who do you think is being fooled?

The ONLY WAY anything can be done in this country to generate TRUE copyright reform is for BOTH the Democrats AND Republicans to be shown the door on Capitol Hill. Good luck making THAT happen.

Exactly.
And that's also the reason why I harbor scant hope for our nation to reverse its downward spiral in so many other areas as well. America has had it.
