The Spotlight Interview: Mizxoncevd

Mizxoncevd, the fabulously intense yet incredibly creative duo, has long been a fixture here at DMusic. The Spotlight caught up with one half of this inventive couple, Sinai, hater of sculpture, ficus killer and musical guru of the group. As he tells it, hailing from Chillicothe, Ohio, a "smashing Mayberryville 40 miles south of Columbus" explains a lot about the success he has had in his "26 years of taking oxygen (and adding methane) from this planet."

Sinai is the middle child of four. His older brother Shawn was once a member of an early incarnation of Mizxoncevd. He says, that while they couldn't be described as hillbillies, he feels they grew up as if they were. In Appalacia, most people do not have money and sinai's family was no different. He describes them as "white trash to a T". His family did live in the obligatory trailer and though they did not starve, sinai explains that they saw their share of "shitty" times. As he puts it, "nothing will give you ambition for a better life like spending a Sunday banging and scraping frozen shit out of a 3 inch PVC pipe because the line froze up and you can't flush your toilet!"

If you don't play sports in Chillicothe, Ohio, you join a band and that's what sinai did. He says it was just something to do while they drank. Initially, he was the singer because the guitarist coudn't sing and sinai was the one who knew someone with the drum machine so, he says, "they had to have me in the band somewhere." That original band was a trip hpo centered metal group with two bassists and two singers, one male and one female. Though he had hopes for that band it crashed and burned after one live gig. He says "it wasn't really anything music related. Some of us were more concerned with beer and weed and running game on a girl the guitarist was interested in, while dating his sister." Looking back, he admits, he made some mistakes.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of getting a shout from sinai is probably familiar with his opening line "so this baby seal walks into a club...". DMers are also familiar with his cutting wit and biting sarcasm. It's fitting that the questions submitted by the members of DM for this interview were equally as witty. Sinai is, as he once told me himself, one of the nicest people I will ever know. Enjoy the interview and if you haven't discovered Mizxoncevd yet, run to his page and get on board!

Let's start with the obvious. Any artists out there that you admire or are influenced by?

William Hung, because if HE can make it, goddamnit, anybody can!
And all the weird, spacey, hippie bands like Myth, Altan, Dead Can Dance, Clannad, and dmusic's Digital C.P. i rip so much from those types of groups my stuff is practically remixes.

Do you play live? If so, tell us about it.

Mizxoncevd has played several live shows around Chillicothe, as well as a few in Florida, where Danny, another former member, lived for awhile. Most of them were low key "open mic" type stuff, or opening for bands of friends of ours. Strangely however, i couldn't tell you first hand how any of them went down, because i've never attended one. it was usually just Danny doing a spoken word or droppin a rap, or Megan, another former member, singing over my tracks in the background. It's too bad i never made it to any of them either, it'd be cool to witness a gig of your own band as a spectator, not many people can say they've done that.

How do you create your music? How do you record it?

I compose most of my tracks using Magix Music Maker and fruity loops 4.1 (there's many newer versions of FL than that, but that version suits my purposes so i see no reason to upgrade). I do like to use live instruments when i can, to add a bit of a personal touch and abit more respectful than just mixing loops so i give things like turntables (Stantons), hand drums, a fucking ocarina, just anything that might suit a track i'm working on, and make it look like i'm actually doing a bit of work. (He also uses a BOSS DR-5 drum machine)

All recording is done with Cakewalk Home Studio Software.

You do have some of the most creative pieces on DM. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Once i have a hook, i just run with it. When it comes to tone or atmosphere or a message i want to get across in a track, i try to take on some of the run of the mill heavy subjects, death, war, religion, try to give an old road a new lane. I seem to revisit witchcraft, ghosts and spirits, and perceived social injustice quite abit, i have no problem with that. Mizxoncevd has undergone alot of transformations since me and danny formed it, even the stuff we used to upload to dmusic when we started out has next to nothing in common with what i'm doing now, except to suck a little bit more, but it's always had that tone of underlying menace and darkness, and thats something i wanna stay with.

This question is from Rodrica. You are a USA/UK duo...do you think there are any fundamental differences in the way people in the States and the UK approach/view music?

Jesus, look at Rodz firing the Diane Sawyer shit! I'm a dude in his bedroom with drum machines and shit, i can't speak on behalf of two continents. When it comes to Mizxoncevd, I tend to be the one who sets the beats, Rasta kicks in with ideas for layers and hooks, though thats a moot point really because she hasn't contributed much in over a year, lazy slag.

Hmmm, sinai and Redrasta...where'd you get your screen names?

(Sinai is)... a mountain in the middle east, i got it out of the Bible. No good reason really, just thought it sounded cool. Rasta is a nickname given to here by me for the dredz she sports. I have other "bedroom" names for her that I'd gladly list here, if i was in any hurry to meet her ire.

Are there any genres of music you just can't get into? What are they and why?

Bluegrass. There was a night at work awhile back where some lady had a bluegrass station piped in over our PA for several hours. I spent most of the night scared that I died on the way to work. In the end though, it was just shitty irritating music, no sulphur, fire or brimstone. The cure for cancer lies in either the banjo or the fiddle, nothing can escape the death grip of either one of those things.

Imemine wants to know....exactly WHO is "The Man"?

Ask anyone who's wearing a No Boundries tie.

How does one get to be such a cunning linguist?

If you didn't get that joke, I'm not going to explain it to you.

What is the punchline to the baby seal goes into ....

A baby seal walks into a club...pretty self explanatory, and hilariously tragic. Kind of like watching a video of a sky diver who's chute doesn't open. That shit's funny til they hit.

What would you do for a Klondike bar?

I hate those fucking things. They'd have to give me something to eat one. I'd eat a Klondike bar for a roomful of lesbians, otherwise, they can keep that nasty shit.

Okay then, how many licks does it take to get to the chewy center of a tootsie roll pop?

Three. Because the owl goddamn says so, and we all need to be listening to the fucking owl a little more often.

There's probably more hidden truth in that then we can ever realize.

Hey, where was my answer Mr. Christopher !

Why do you greet Brits with Argentina Rules !! Is this the name of some hot band or a generally insidious and insulting comment to provoke a flame war ;) (Wink) Laughs Out Loud

it's just sort of a running joke i had going with some english friends of mine when i was over in Brighton recently, i was trying to get them to help finance a small business of that name that would sell merchandise from the Aregentina soccer team.

they implored upon me that that most likely would not be a very successful business venture, though they did invite me to a veteran's pub to inquire further about financing with its patrons.

no success there either...
