AgentMGD On the Town

“…Alright boys line up and I’ll lift up my skirts…”
“King of the Catholic Church’ – Pool of Frogs

Hey, AgentMGD’s back in the old neighborhood hanging out in the heart of the Ukrainian Village to see her hopping friends, Pool of Frogs. They performed Thursday night at the Darkroom which provided the perfect atmosphere for their set. The dim candlelit venue (hence the name) is very spacious for holding live acts. You could feel the cool vibes from this place. Before the show, AgentMGD had an opportunity to chat with Will, the Frogs’ drummer. According to him, the band is finishing up new recordings. So expect them to return to the New Music Binge soon to talk about their latest project. Oh since they knew “King of the Catholic Church” is AgentMGD’s favorite Frogs’ song, she was going to get a special surprise from them. Read on and find out what it was!

“I’m the Stalker, motherfuckers!” started their set with a touch of country rock. This band still had the same energizer bunny effect on AgentMGD like when she first saw them at Subterranean months ago. It was very infectious then as it was now while they rocked on stage. You can feel it from the lead on guitar and vocals to the drummer jamming in the back. And if you’re really feel the vibes, you’ll be hopping along with the Frogs too. Their “Honey I’m Stoned” song is a funny little ditty with its country twang could have you doing a Texas 2-step too. During their 2nd song, AgentMGD could hear the solid rock angst in the vocals before the band jammed with a cool instrumental set. You would think by the time they started their 3rd song the Frogs would be tired. Ha! This band is just warming up. This song featured some keyboard action inside the rhythm and beats. Everyone was feeling the Frogs vibe right now and was hopping around on and off stage. Got to love the lead screaming “Momma” as the band went into another instrumental to end it. Moving right along into their 4th song about the different sides of life, AgentMGD liked how it ended with a rockin’ drum and guitar duet. By the time the Frogs began their next song, it was good to see that the lead didn’t lose his “Jack Black” look even though he was sporting shorter hair. This hard rock song had a set of amazing guitar riffs during the middle.

Now the next 2 songs that Frogs performed were about the lead’s Mom. One of them was a brand new song which AgentMGD is certain it would be on their upcoming CD. The song starts off gently like a loving ballad and then it rocks before going back to the original rhythm. The drum build-up towards the end gets two thumbs-up from AgentMGD. What mad the song totally awesome was when they sang part of it acoustically. There were some fanatic Pool of Frogs in attendance Thursday night and they seemed to like this new song. The other Mom song contained lyrics about needing more rock stars like Jim Morrison and “We need more drugged out comedians”. Whoever came up with such ideas is a genius in their thinking. Still high on pure energy, the Frogs rocked out the audience with a bang and “I love you, Mom!” Their energized and animated antics as part of their stage performance didn’t stop there. No way…there was still more left in this band. Where does it come from – AgentMGD doesn’t know as a marching drum beat began their next song. Whew! What energy that was felt when the Frogs performed “Taking It to the Grave”. It might have been a somber song but you can feel the rock energy it pumps out. “You guys are sensitive!” cries one fan in the audience. “I know” was the reply back.
Though they weren’t hopping around due to the small stage size like they did at Subterranean, the excitement and hopping was still there. During their next song, the keys made a return to keep the Frogs’ energy going as the band jammed away on stage. The next song started off slow and gentle but totally rocked. The echoing reverb, however, was a tad too loud coming from the keys and bass while being played at the same time. Still the song rocked at the end. Their last song of the night was dedicated to some woman named Tanya (I wonder who she is? *giggles*) because it was her favorite song. Though she hiding in the back, AgentMGD was certain they found her before starting this funny song. Ah no Frogs’ performance wouldn’t be complete with this song being performed. Sing with AgentMGD now “Hallelujah! Hallelujah! King of the Catholic Church!” Told you the Frog’s vibe would be contagious especially while singing along with the band during this song. It was another fun time with the Frogs and AgentMGD hopes to do it again soon. To check out where the Pool of Frogs will be hopping next, go to their www.pooloffrogs.com.

Until next time and support your local indie artists and music.

Peace
