Nik Kershaw has a new album lined up for release this year. Anyone with any knowledge of Nik’s work will be aware that there are countless compilation albums containing the same old tracks in a different order (or digitally re-mastered) which have been churned out by the record company.
What many people many not be aware of is that Nik’s next offering is going to be a completely independent venture.
Nik says it best himself:
“My contract with Universal has expired, along with any remaining
faith I had in multi national corporations.”
“Promoting a “best of” was never going to be my idea of fun and I
felt a bit crummy about selling people the same old s*** again but
there were four new tracks and a man in a suit told me he was going
to spend gazillions of quid on TV advertising.”
“I can only assume that there must have been some kind of
misunderstanding. My fault of course, I really must brush up on my
ManInSuitSpeak. ‘Gazillions of quid’, it turns out, means £4.50.”
So with twelve brand-new tracks in hand, Nik and his partner Sarah are embarking on feeding the frenzied fans themselves.
The album is entitled ‘You’ve Got To Laugh’ and promises to be every bit as good as my personal favourites, ‘To Be Frank’, and ’15 Minutes’. If you take music at all seriously (and why would any Dmusic member feel anything other than passionately about music) you will appreciate the craftsmanship and imagination that has gone into each and every track on these two albums.
‘To Be Frank’ contains, among others, a number of tracks that explore the darker side of Nik’s own character while 15 Minutes has an excellent mix of upbeat tracks and ballads that will appeal to all. Nik has stated that ‘Billy’ has probably the best lyrics he has ever written. The title track is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the fickle nature of the music industry while ‘Somebody Loves You’ is part insight and part tribute to the fans.
