Hey guys. Very often in my music therapy groups, there's a patient here and there who hasn't spoken in a long time. They're basically mute because of problems with alzheimer's.
All of a sudden, they will hear a song that they remember and start making noises, sometimes (rarely) start singing random words and then all of a sudden (on a really good day) start speaking. Well, I was able to witness that just the other day and wanted to share it with you guys. It was such a great experience to witness. I was sitting there, playing my usual music. In this case, it was You Are My Sunshine and there is this woman who almost no one has ever heard speak. She used to be able to speak about a year ago. In the last 3 months she's basically gone mute. Hasn't said almost a word in that time. Anyway, while I was playing the song, her caretaker was clapping in front of her and singing in front of her and all of a sudden, the patient started singing the words to the song. It was incredible! Unfortunately, after that she said a few words to us but didn't quite make sense and then just stopped talking again. Anyway, I wanted to share it with you guys because it's small miracles like this that make my job worth it... :-)... of course... I wouldn't mind being rich... hehehe

Truly inspirational. The healing power of music (not RIAA music, which is pathogenic) is something to behold.
Great post Mark!

I've always wondered how come Alzheimer patients can't remember what they did like 2 minutes ago, but can sing along a song that they heard in their younger years. Just absolutely friggin' amazing !!
