Bob Marley’s Wailers Reunite for First Time in Two Decades
On June 25, the remaining original members of iconic reggae group, The Wailers, will perform together for the first time in over 20 years outside of Woodstock at Hunter Mountain. Bunny Wailer will host this historic event. Along with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, Bunny founded the original Wailers in 1964 and, with his legendary partners, went on to make Reggae music famous on a global scale. The Wailers began playing together as teenagers in Trench Town, Jamaica and rose to international fame with dozens of hits incuding "I Shot The Sheriff," "One Love," and "No Woman No Cry." Joining Bunny on stage will be original Wailers’ back up trio, the I-Threes which includes Rita Marley (Bob Marley’s widow and a brilliant performer in her own right), Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths. Rita Marley sang with a trio named The Soulettes in the mid-sixties before meeting Marley. She married him in 1966, and then became a singer in his backup group, the I-Threes. Marcia Griffiths is one of the great divas of reggae, having had a stream of Studio One hits in the 1960s before scoring a massive international success with the song "Young, Gifted and Black. " Judy Mowatt was first a lead singer with the girl group The Gaylettes. When the group split she continued as a solo act until joining Rita Marley to sing with Marcia Griffiths. Shortly afterwards they decided to name their trio the I-Threes. These remaining Wailers, each a legend, will be traveling to New York from far and wide. Rita Marley, will be making the longest trek, coming from her home in Ghana to participate in this historic event. The reunion presents music that continues to be politically relevant and cuts a straight line back to the genre‘s rebellious roots that made Jamaica "the loudest island in the world." Fans will witness an extraordinary event that promises to create new history in Woodstock.
