Spam and Advertising has always been frowned upon by the internet world, and even the members of the Dmusic community have been effected from time to time by people who get a little too trigger happy with the copy paste commands.
With this in mind, it is worth mentioning that even microsoft has issued crackdowns on spam which some may find a little ironic as the advertising still filters through on the television from the very same company that wishes to stamp it out.
The main difference is that they pay for it, instead of simply adopting an annoying, not very well thought out slogan like "Hey you, buy my stuff" and posting it on every system that doesn't have winpop disabled on the planet.
In short, people can get annoyed if you constantly invite yourself into their personal space and try to flog your wares like a pit bull chasing a chicken around the backyard. In fact, people can be downright intimidated when they spend 5 minutes extra answering a spam message out of politeness, only to find their partners glaring at them armed with a rolling pin or frypan.
Oh the users do notice when a comment is mass distributed in a heartless manner, and so do the administrators.
For that reason, we must try and be considerate of others in this day and age, and lead ourselves triumphantly out of the spam wars. We as Dmusic members are better than that.
The shoutbox and note system is there so you can communicate with people about everyday things, and from time to time yes, we may even tell each other about a new song that we're proud of ourselves for creating. There's nothing wrong with that.
There's also nothing wrong with promoting your own work. We have a forum especially for that, and it literally gets to far more users than spamming (and in a far less intimidating way.) If others like your music, without a doubt they will tell other people about a great song by you.
The next time you think "I know... why don't I copy paste the same remark to every person on my buddy list," keep in mind that most people will NOT listen to your song out of spite. To get people to listen to your music, listen to theirs and post helpful comments. They will most likely return the favor.
