Remember the one hit wonders of the 70s? I certainly do. That is the time I grew up and songs like “Play That Funky Music White Boy” were dominating the airwaves. This happened to be one of my favorite tunes. Wild Cherry was the band, they were a bunch of white boys that sounded black, and the song was a direct reflection of who they were and what they were trying to do.

Some songs never go away and if they do, they always seem to pop up again on a TV commercial or an artist like Dino Jag decides to do a few remixes for all the dance floor freaks. Dino does a nice job updating the tune with two different versions. The “Original Mix” and “Electrodelic Mix.” Each one has its own persona while relying on the original rhythm and lyrics. The “Original Mix” is a more of traditional electronica meltdown while the “Electrodelic” sounds more futuristic with the vocal treatments and rapid-fire rhythms and beats. To each his own, but I think both tracks will surely find a home on countless dance floors all over the globe.

Because it is my policy to review at least three tracks, I asked Dino for another select song to enjoy. Even though the focus is “Play That Funky Music 2005”, he was gracious enough to send over this excellent track titled “Twenty Four Seven.” The track puts the man in a different light and shows him as very capable song crafter with quite a voice and the ability to carry some nice smooth rhythms along to the music. I am glad I had a chance to hear this song as well because now I know that there is a lot more to this artist than reworking a tune to fit the club scene, which is fine, but this puts him into an entirely different category after hearing “Twenty Four Seven.” I would love to hear more songs like that. When I listen to the song each time I think of it as hit single, the same with the “Play That Funky Music 2005,” I think it would fly.
