What if I/we set up set up a website (or just used, for example, the link to "artists" at the very top of this page) that included nothing more than a whole slew of links to independent music artist websites AND each of thr artists listed each threw an equal amount of $$$ into a pot to buy ad-space on MTV/VH1/CMT &/or etc.
The ad itself would be a 15 or 30 second spot with TEXT ONLY.
At the TOP of the ad (and for the duration of the ad) would be seen:
============================
"DON'T INFRINGE ON RIAA COPYRIGHTS! DOWNLOAD FREE INDIE MUSIC INSTEAD! (Each of the below artists allow you to NONCOMMERCIALLY share mp3's via p2p, and/or fill your iPod's!)"
--------
[[[Here in the middle of the 15-30 sec ad would be a scroll of each artist who participated]]]
--------
VISIT [[[site's url goes here]]] IF YOU ARE NOT FAST ENOUGH TO WRITE DOWN OR REMEMBER ALL THE ABOVE LINKS PROVIDED BY INDEPENDENT MUSIC ARTISTS!
===========================
Folks, it would be EXPENSIVE, I know. But if we could divide and spread the cost out among 500 or 1000 indie artists???
============================
Like I say, I have "pipe-dream" ideas like this all the time. Wish like the dickens I could afford to implement one of them once in a while.

We should make this anything but a pipe dream, IMO, this is a good idea and most likely one that if successful will be very effective.

What the masses have been programmed to think or what they understand music to be today is corporate rock, rap, and R&B. Trying to educate them alone maybe an uphill battle....You're right Mike this website may not be enough. It’s really time to think outside the box.

GadflyDiscourse, this "website" certainly is NOT "enough" (We have NOTHING but our ideas and ideals. There is NO "power" nor any "funding" of any sort BECAUSE we deliberately choose NOT to "organize".)
...I guess that MIGHT mean we will "loose" in the end.

Gad, please put your "nice" face on for a while.
I am getting depressed at the moment and need you and the rest of our regular participants to "pick up" the mood.
(Hell, have a big "flamewar" or something to take my mind off of my "sinking feeling" ...lol)
==========
ah, nevermind me, I just need some sleep.

Does anyone live in a city that still has public access channels? Phoenix does not.

Problem is, the same cartels that own the major labels own the broadcast media, too. They would not welcome the competition from music that they don't make any $ on. Ever try to get your band played on the radio? This ain't the 60's anymore. Public access would allow the message, but who would see it? Now, a full-page ad in the WSJ would be seen by a lot of people, and really get the message out there.

I'm with Suitably on this one. There has to be someway of getting around this corporate juggernaut. We really need to start throwing ideas around...Fine if this site doesn't want to get organized that's ok..Act on your own...But for G-D's sake if you have something meaningful please share it with us. I'm with you too Mike....I'm so down there's just so much Simpsons, Spears, Slim Shady's, and JLo's a person can take.....Almost ten years running with these people on top and nothing has changed, as a matter of fact the heroworshiping is getting worse .....We really need to end this reign of no talent pop artists...Now! We know that the artists are out there. Somebody needs to find somehow some way to get the public up to date on Indie artists. Suitably is right get the information out there. We’re in the Internet age....The Communication age...We shouldn’t be struggling with the great gift at our disposal . Let’s get technical and starting using what we have to the best of it’s ability. If we don’t use the Internet, cell phones, Computers, BlackBerry’s, email, faxs the Major media will.
Man I’m at the point that I hate these Hollywood Media Corporations so much that I’m willing to sign on with the anti-Globalization folks.
My God eMTv has some stupid show about steroids for Christ sakes! What does this have to do with music? This all has to stop!

Look at how much money has been raised for Patti Santangelo.
You wanna buy an ad in the Wall Street Journal?

USA Today charges more than $100,000 for a full-page ad. More if you want color or Friday.

MTV plays commercials for the independent label Victory records all the time.
Hey, how about hiring a plane to do skywriting in the sky?
How about getting a guy to jump up on stage with a message painted on his body at the Grammy's like that Soy Bomb guy did to Bob Dylan?
Maybe someone is willing to take a record company guy hostage to promote the cause like Al Pacino did in Dog Day Afternoon? Attica! Attica! Attica! But instead say something like: Indie Music! Indie Music! Indie Music!
Just a little brainstorming. : )

The cheapest advertizing you can do is targeted,
1st decide on a age bracket
2nd ask questions from people in this age group, what do you like in music, what would make you purchase, where do you hang out, where do you eat, what would catch you eye on a sign, what clothing do you like. The question pool can be designed to fit your area of the country you wish to target.
3rd find yourself a commerical artist that willing to work toward your end.
4th what ever is settled on as the design for the advertizing campain it must be used from coast to coast so people can relate to your advertizing everwhere.
Now lets say we have a poster with the desired info we want to share like maybe a live concert night on D-Music ever Friday night. (Battle of the Bands) The poster should be displayed in places where your target groups get together. Many malls rent wall space for a few dallors a week and some are free. A poster nailed to a telephone post, one taped on the side of your car the point is to get everone to the same point for the same reason at the same time. Getting organized is the hard part and timing will mean everthing and the artist will have to be at their best. Pre recorded videos would be great I fell that would keep the fans better then just audio. A speaker with the gift of gab needs to run this. Treat it like a live broadcast, I do not believe that I have seen anything based of this format on the enternet which would increase it,s chances to work.
