This is to keep the artist "on track", so that he/she keeps following the course that is set out for him/her. If the artist tries to drift away from the "cause", he/she is getting threatened, "re-programmed", denied to make more records (fired), or even killed. In the late 70's this stuff was total BS. Today the people spouting it are still doing it for BS purposes. But they may be closer to the truth than they think.

Led Zeppelin had no reversed lyrics. That "Stairway To Heaven" thing has long been proved a myth.

Black Sabbath's lyrics tended to be more Christian than most Evangelist preaching. They just knew how to terrify Christians with their own fire and brimstone imagery.

Marilyn Manson never made any secret of his Satanic leanings. They were his main selling point.

You kinda know it’s BS by the bands and artists they attack, as this displays a total lack of knowledge about rock music. Anybody who really knows rock music can point you at some classic examples of backmasking.

ELO’s “Fire On High,” which when you play it backwards gives you a very scary voice saying “The music is reversible, but time is not. Turn Back! TURN BACK!!!”

Pink Floyd’s “Empty Spaces,” which when played backwards says, “Congratulations, you have found the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink at the funny farm.”

Prince’s “Computer Blue,” which when played backwards says, “Hello, I’m happy, because The Lord is coming sOOooOOooOOn.”

Obviously backmasking was never anything but a way for artists to hide little humorous gags for fans to find. But today’s steady diet of mind numbing artless dribble pouring out of speakers everywhere you go might just be the fall of society. Is it a master plan or just the result of mass social stupidity? Who knows? But if it keeps up much longer, future young people might not have enough brains to read the street crossing signs.

Slim Whitman's version of Una Paloma Blanca had a backwards message merely asking what device was being used to play it.

The poster was correct in regard to the Stairway to Heaven version by Led Zep. A group of impartial listeners were not able to agree that they could discern "Satan is lord" being chanted while the record played in reverse.
To others, though, the very notion that heaven could even be conceived of as having a stairway for sale was sheer anathema, so they were opposed to the song itself anyway just for the title alone.

My opinion: Our nation has a lot of information freedom.
I say, let's keep that way.
If something really does seem too inciteful or offensive, it should be looked at on a case by case basis. I think much trouble comes from the oppression caused by painting too broad a brush, so to speak.
