Gorilla Operation Biography
Posted by DMemberdaniel in on October 3, 2005 at 4:14 AM

Gorilla Operation are a newly formed Progressive Rock Band in Wollongong, Australia. Gorilla Operation consists of Matt Bell on lead guitar, Jack Murray on Bass, Jariss on Lead Vocals and Mitch Bell on Drums. Even though they are new on the prog rock muisc scene, they show great promise for the future. The Band was formed when Matt Bell, lead guitar, and Jack Murray, bass guitar, decided that they'd have a crack at forming a punk / jam band, under the name 'Rick Has Friends' with a friend named 'Bucko' on rythm guitars . After a short time, Bucko decided to leave the band and follow up on his side project "Bucko's Gang". After Bucko's departure, Matt realised that his brother, Mitch, had a great talent on the drums. So Mitch became the bands first full time drummer. The three-piece covered a lot of 'Anti-Flag' and 'Pennywise' material, but still felt that their own music needed to be heard. It was at this time that the band underwent its first official name change. 'Rick Has Friends' had become 'The Surds' in a matter of days.
The three boys continued without a vocalist for some time until a young lad named Jariss was accepted as the 4th offical member of the band. It was at this time that the band decided it was time for another change of name. It had come to the attention of Matt and Jack that 'The Surds' was a really poor name for a band, so it was changed to 'Hit By A Bus'. Many fans belive this was the best and most creative name, yet it wasn't to be. It had become quite clear that there were dozens of other bands going by the name 'Hit By A Bus' so a change was unavoidable. Again, through much deliberation, the band was renamed "Gorilla Operation". A band logo was created to accompany this name change.
Although the band is still in the recording stages of its debut album, still untitled, 'Gorilla Operation' have writen many demo songs that were distributed to friends and fans. These inclued the polically influenced 'Ho Chi Minh - Tribute To A Commie' and the somewhat lyrically Primus influenced 'House Of Cheese'. Jarriss' vocals on 'House Of Cheese' are similar to Dusty Hill (of 'ZZ Top' fame).
'Gorilla Operation' have many cover songs to their name, such as the Primus classic 'Kalamazoo' and the highly critically acclaimed theme song to 'Sponge Bob Square Pants' which recently reached #1 on the "Most Downloaded List"
